Brief Description
The Parks Student is responsible for grounds maintenance at municipal parks and buildings, operating various small implements, attachments, mowers, and hand tools related to turf and sports field maintenance. Other duties include preparing soils and transplanting foliage, weeding, watering plants, setup, and cleanup of parks for outdoor events and/or festivals. The Parks Student must be able to work all shifts for the duration of employment beginning the first day after final University/Community College exams commencing in late April or early May until September.

Requirements
Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Greet the public, respond to inquiries, and provide a high standard of customer service.
  • Perform tasks related to turf and trail maintenance.
  • Operate all related implements, lawn equipment, power trimmers, blowers, and manual hand tools.
  • Cleaning and basic maintenance of equipment.
  • Weeding, cleaning, and watering of flower/landscape beds in parks and high traffic areas.
  • Setup and cleanup of parks for festivals and/or events.
  • Perform general park maintenance such as sanitation, cleaning, painting, and other related maintenance.
  • Maintain accurate records of work performed.
  • Present a professional appearance and attitude at all times.
  • Participate in meetings and in-service training as required.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of three (3) months previous related experience
  • Must be attending University/Community College on a full-time basis and returning back to full-time attendance in September 2026
  • Hold and maintain at minimum a valid Class "G2" driver's license
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

Qualifications Considered Assets

  • Enrolled in a Landscape Horticulture program or equivalent
  • Current Standard First Aid with CPR "C" and AED

Working Conditions

  • Duties shall primarily be performed outdoors in all weather conditions
  • Travel within the Town to various locations
  • Operation of a motor vehicle
  • Manual dexterity to use hand tools, power equipment, tractors, etc.
  • Safety equipment will be required (e.g., safety shoes, glasses/goggles, gloves, vest, hardhat, hearing protection, etc.)

Hours of Work

  • Hours of work Sunday - Saturday, days, evenings, weekend, and holidays as required
  • 40 hours per week

Physical Requirements

  • Physical work environment requiring extended periods of walking, standing, sitting, bending, lifting, crouching, climbing, pushing, pulling, driving, and varying levels of noise
