The Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Superintendent is responsible for the development of strategic plans, business plans and budgets while directing and supporting the day-to-day IPM operations. This position is responsible for leading a team of staff in understanding the complexities of the different IPM portfolios (i.e., corporate programs, wildlife management, insect management, etc.). Primary duties include:

  • Plan, implement, budget, and track Invasive Species Management programs for Parks and Open Spaces Asset owners.
  • Track and report on performance measures, benchmarks, and annual goals and objectives requirements.
  • Develop tenders for materials and/or services required in accordance with procurement standards.
  • Ensure good partnership management and community relations through appropriately and timely addressing concerns.
  • Liaise with internal partners to ensure the implementation of strategic corporate and business unit initiatives. Also, to coordinate, communicate, implement Invasive Species control programs that address concerns, follow strategic direction, and comply with all Federal, Provincial and Municipal legislation.
  • Liaise with external partners understand interests and issues, and address concerns.
  • Manage HR activities: recruitment; coaching and training, performance management including progressive discipline up to termination; mentoring and staff development, and health, safety, and environment requirements.
  • Develop schedules, assign work, monitor progress, and ensure quality and service standards are met.
  • Ensure accurate and updated mapping data for invasive species infestations in the Parks Asset and Reporting Information System (PARIS) and Global Information Systems (GIS).
  • Manage and consult on capital projects; collaborate with the Planning and Development Division and inspectors to coordinate work related to invasive species management prior to Final Acceptance.

Qualifications

  • A Journeyman Landscape Gardener Program Certificate (LGAP) and Certified Alberta Pesticide Applicators License plus at least 10 years of experience in pest management, parks operations, horticultural services, pesticide management and supervision; OR
  • A completed 2 year Diploma in a related field plus at least 8 years of experience in pest management, parks operations, horticultural services, pesticide management and supervision; OR
  • A degree in a related field plus at least 4 years of experience in pest management, parks operations, horticultural services, pesticide management and supervision.
  • Equivalent combinations of experience and education may be considered.
  • Access to a personal vehicle for business use is required.
  • A valid Class 5 Driver's License (or provincial equivalency) with no more than 6 demerits OR a Class 5 Graduated Driver's License (GDL) with no more than 4 demerits, and no current charges or suspension pending is required.
  • Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) and ArcGIS will be considered assets.
  • Success in this role requires strong communication, strategic thinking skills, analytical, strategic planning, project, and time management skills.
  • Ability to obtain a City of Calgary operator's permit.
