The Apprentice Heavy Duty Technician will, as their training allows, undertake the job and functions of a Journeyperson as outlined below. In addition, the Apprentice may be required to undertake training and practical work as part of the apprenticeship program that may not normally be utilized by the Corporation and may not be reflected below.

  • Participates in team meetings in accordance with the principles of team management to determine generation program objectives, to provide input to group financial and program planning, and to assess and coordinate unit workload and priorities.
  • Maintains and repairs diesel engines, generators of various sizes and auxiliary equipment as per Corporation guidelines, and acts in a pro-active manner to make timely recommendations for continuous improvement of operations and equipment.
  • Completes and/or assists with scheduled overhauls in a timely and professional manner according to Corporation standards.
  • Makes routine trips to remote satellite plants for inspection, preventative maintenance, installation and repairs to equipment and to complete various tests as required (e.g. such as vibration monitoring, lubricating oil and water sampling).
  • Completes trip and equipment reports, prepares required parts lists for diesel maintenance and fuel and oil inventories, provides distributed labour data, and ensures valid travel and freight costing.
  • Provides accurate assessment of equipment and diesel plants and troubleshoots various mechanical problems both on site and over the telephone.
  • Provides assistance to other trades and contractors as required, and provides guidance and training to operations and casual staff.
  • Maintains a clean and safe work environment in the performance of work, maintains all tools and equipment in good working condition, and ensures compliance to all safety programs, health and safety legislation, and Corporation Safety Rules in the completion of work activities.
  • Provides training to and receives training from co-workers and performs other duties related to Energy North Operations as determined by the work group in consultation with the Director, Energy North Operations
  • High School Diploma or General Education Diploma / Canadian Adult Education Credential or a minimum passing grade in each of the following courses English 20-2 or Literacy 30; Math 10C; and Science 10; or show you have already received a passing mark of 70% or higher on the Trades Entrance Exam #5. Must include transcripts with your application, all in one attachment.
  • Valid NWT Class 5 driver's license (or equivalent) is required.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both in written and verbal form.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Must be willing/able to attend trade courses/school when required throughout the apprentice program.
  • Must provide satisfactory criminal background check.

This position is located in Fort Simpson, NT. Salary for this position starts at $31.53/hr. and increases as the apprenticeship progresses (as per Collective Agreement); in addition, a location allowance of approximately $6,184 per annum.
