Toronto ON MV G, Canada Cortex Design Inc Full time $75,000 - $125,000 per year

The Opportunity

Located in Toronto's design district near King & Spadina, Cortex Design is a full-service product development firm specializing in the design and engineering of technically complex medtech products.

We're hiring a Design Engineer to help translate industrial design concepts into design-led medical devices. We're open to candidates at different stages of their career:

  • If you're earlier in your journey and bring exceptionally strong CAD skills, motivation, curiosity, and a collaborative attitude, we can help you grow into the role.
  • If you're more experienced, we expect you to own mechanical system architecture, develop production-ready CAD, mentor others, and navigate the complexities of medical device development under an ISO 13485 framework.

Above all, we hire for drive, inquisitiveness, problem-solving, and great team fit. This is a hands-on, high-impact role for a technically sharp, systems-minded engineer who appreciates great design.

What are WE Like?

We're not your average medtech consultancy.

Cortex is an ISO 13485-certified, design-led firm that lives at the intersection of human-centred design and engineering excellence. We exist to create beautiful, life-changing experiences that substantially improve human quality of life.

We've helped clients develop award-winning, emotionally resonant products that span healthcare and consumer markets—and we're just getting started. Our team is multidisciplinary, collaborative, fast-moving, and deeply invested in client success.

We're also the only Canadian team ever to win an XPRIZE, and we take pride in blending artistry with technical rigour.

Clients come to us because they want products that are intuitive, beautiful, and engineered with discipline. Our downtown studio houses everything from early research and prototyping to precision assembly, giving us the ability to move fast and deliver with confidence.

If you want an inside look at how we think and work, check out our website, follow us on LinkedIn, or explore our blog.

What You'll Do

You'll help develop and engineer medical devices from concept through production, working alongside industrial designers, fellow design engineers, embedded systems developers, and biomedical engineers to bring design-led products to life.

Depending on your experience, you will:

  • Create production-ready parts, assemblies, and manufacturing drawings in SOLIDWORKS
  • Contribute to (or own) mechanical system architecture, packaging strategy, and DFM planning
  • Collaborate with Embedded Systems to align mechanical and electronic functionality
  • Support prototype fabrication, benchtop testing, and low-volume builds in-house
  • Select materials and components with manufacturing, safety, and supply chain in mind
  • Participate in design reviews, risk discussions, and cross-functional problem-solving
  • Work within our ISO 13485 QMS—including design controls, verification, documentation, and traceability
  • Communicate clearly with clients, suppliers, and internal teams
  • (For more experienced candidates) Mentor design engineering team members and model best practices in design, documentation, and decision-making

What We're Looking For

Because we're open to different experience levels, we've split competencies into Foundational Requirements (must-haves for all candidates) and Advanced Competencies (expected for candidates with deeper industry experience).

Foundational Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Mechatronics, or Robotics Engineering (or equivalent experience)
  • Exceptionally strong 3D CAD modelling skills (SOLIDWORKS preferred)
  • Solid grasp of mechanical fundamentals and problem-solving
  • Curiosity, motivation, and a collaborative approach
  • Excellent communication abilities
  • High attention to detail and quality

If you're earlier in your career and meet the foundational requirements, we're open to training the rest.

Advanced Competencies

  • 3–6+ years designing, engineering, and verifying electromechanical products
  • Proven experience mentoring team members
  • Demonstrated ability to own mechanical system architecture and DFM
  • Proficiency with various production methods (injection molding, overmolding, die-casting, CNC machining, rapid prototyping, PCB manufacturing)
  • Experience working within an ISO 13485 or similar regulated framework
  • Strong analytical judgment with a systems-thinking mindset

Preferred Competencies

  • 5+ years designing consumer-facing medical devices
  • Experience operating within an ISO 13485 QMS
  • Project management experience
  • Familiarity with ISO 9001, UL/CSA/FCC/CE, ISO
  • Risk Management (ISO or Human Factors (ISO exposure
  • Freehand sketching ability
  • Adobe CS Suite skills
  • Fusion 360 or cloud-native CAD exposure
  • Mechatronics or electrical engineering experience

Show Us What You've Got

If you think you could make an impact with us, please send your resume along with a brief cover letter explaining why we'd be an awesome fit for each other.

A product development portfolio is strongly preferred and will be a significant factor in our hiring process.

We look forward to hearing from you
