ABOUT THE JOB
The Preventive Maintenance & Reliability Specialist is responsible for proactively identifying equipment risks, potential failures, and operational inefficiencies in the recycling process of a specific location. This role focuses on equipment assessments, root-cause identification, preventive maintenance planning, and providing recommendations to ensure equipment reliability, safety, and longevity.
This position does not perform mechanical repairs. Instead, it provides diagnostic expertise, data-driven insights, and recommendations to maintenance teams, operations, and leadership, be it Sparta's maintenance teams, local teams or the company's maintenance experts.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Conduct on-site inspections of equipment, machinery, and facilities at client locations across Canada and the United States.
- Identify early signs of equipment wear, malfunction, safety risks, or process concerns and document findings accurately.
- Perform diagnostic assessments using technical tools, visual inspections, checklists, and established preventive maintenance standards.
- Provide detailed reports outlining equipment conditions, priority risks, and recommended corrective actions for maintenance teams.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of existing preventive maintenance programs and suggest improvements based on inspection data and best practices.
- Collaborate with maintenance and operations teams to ensure understanding of identified issues and recommended next steps.
- Track and monitor recurring issues or trends in equipment performance across all client sites.
- Review client maintenance records, logs, and historical data to identify gaps or opportunities for improvement.
- Support the development of standardized preventive maintenance procedures and inspection protocols.
- Ensure that all inspections and recommendations align with safety regulations, company policies, and manufacturer requirements.
- Participate in site audits, safety observations, and reliability assessments as required.
- Maintain clear documentation and reporting to support decision-making by management and maintenance teams.
- Identify and outline sales opportunities for equipment optimization or replacement for Sparta Manufacturing.
SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE
Technical Knowledge
- Strong understanding of mechanical, electrical, and industrial equipment operation and failure indicators.
- Knowledge of preventive maintenance principles, reliability standards, and asset management best practices.
- Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and equipment specifications.
- Familiarity with manufacturing or industrial environments, including safety protocols and regulatory requirements.
- Understanding of root cause analysis (RCA) and reliability-centered maintenance (RCM) concepts are an asset.
Analytical & Diagnostic Skills
- Strong ability to detect early signs of equipment issues through visual inspections and diagnostic assessments.
- Excellent analytical skills with the ability to evaluate data, identify trends, and highlight risks.
- Ability to prioritize issues based on severity, safety impact, and operational risk.
Communication & Reporting Skills
- Strong written communication skills with the ability to create clear, detailed technical reports.
- Ability to communicate inspection findings to maintenance, operations, and management teams in a professional and understandable way.
- Skilled in collaborating with cross-functional teams across multiple locations.
Organizational & Planning Skills
- Strong time-management skills, especially when coordinating inspections across multiple sites.
- Ability to manage schedules, plan travel, and maintain organized documentation.
- High attention to detail and accuracy in all record-keeping activities.

- Ability to build trust and maintain strong working relationships at all levels of the organization.
- Strong problem-solving mindset focused on prevention rather than reaction.

QUALIFICATIONS
· A diploma or degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology, Industrial Maintenance, Automation, or a related field is preferred. Candidates with relevant preventive maintenance experience or equivalent will also be strongly considered.
· 3+ years of experience in maintenance, reliability, asset management, or plant operations.
· Strong ability to diagnose equipment issues without performing repairs.
· Experience conducting equipment inspections and writing technical reports.
· Understanding of preventive and predictive maintenance methodologies (e.g., RCM, root-cause analysis, asset reliability).
· Strong analytical, problem-solving, and observational skills.
· Ability to travel frequently within Canada and the United States.
· Excellent communication skills; ability to translate technical findings into clear recommendations.
· Proficiency with maintenance software is considered an asset.
· Valid passport and ability to cross the U.S. border.
· Physical requirements (e.g., ability to inspect equipment, climb ladders, etc.)
· Must be able to lift objects weighing up to 50 pounds as required
· Work hours (flexibility for travel)
· Bilingual (French/English) is considered an asset.
· Completion of Lean Six Sigma training (Yellow, Green, or Black Belt) is considered a strong asset.
