JOB SUMMARY
Providence Living is a non-profit Catholic-sponsored health care organization focused on long-term care, assisted living, housing, and other community services to support seniors and their family members. Working within the vision and values of Providence Living and in accordance with the policies and processes and under general supervision, establishes a supportive presence that promotes a variety of trauma informed interventions, practices and clinical services that cultivate safety and respect within a long- term care facility. Provides assistance to residents with complex health and cognitive needs and/or their caregivers from various cultural backgrounds by liaising with the clinician and community services, assisting nursing staff in monitoring residents' behaviour, and supporting the interdisciplinary team during the resident care planning process. Acts as a member of the on-shift response team for the site's fire, safety and security functions and intervenes in fire, safety and security related complaints/hazards including non-clinical emergencies and aggression.
All staff have a part to play in preventing adverse events and in promoting safety for patients and staff by being aware of and adhering to all policies and procedures including promptly reporting any risks or safety concerns relating to patient or staff safety.

QUALIFICATIONS
Education, Training, and Experience
- Social Services Certificate from a recognized program, Basic Security Training level 1 and 2 Certificate, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Skills and Abilities
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to deal with others effectively.
- Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.
- Ability to organize work.
- Ability to operate related equipment.
DUTIES
- Provides culturally safe and trauma informed support to residents by monitoring resident safety and observing resident behaviour; responds to escalating behaviour through actions such as verbal de-escalation and use of other violence prevention strategies, in accordance with the care plan; advises nursing staff and/or seeks assistance from other members of the care team as appropriate; provides emotional support to residents.
- Establishes, maintains and enhances therapeutic relationships based on respect with residents and their families by methods such as identifying resident's and family perspectives, initiating discussions to determine and understand resident needs, goals and concerns, engaging resident and family in treatment implementation and self-evaluation, promoting and supporting residents to manage self care, encouraging informed decision making and supplying encouragement and emotional support.
- Establishes a supportive presence in an assigned area through methods such as conducting scheduled/unscheduled foot patrols, providing personal escorts, checking entrances/exits, locks/unlocks doors according to guidelines. May verify identity of persons requesting entrance, monitors contractors/visitors activities to ensure they comply with relevant safety/security policies/procedures and reporting security incidents to Manager as required in accordance with established protocols. Provides assistance to visitors/residents by providing direction and general information.
- Maintains a safe environment for residents and team by performing duties such as ensuring residents and guests adhere to safety and security procedures; reports incident problem to appropriate individual.
- Facilitates the removal of persons from the premises through methods such as utilizing appropriate legal mechanisms and team interventions as appropriate. Under the request/direction of clinical staff, intervenes with residents utilizing a team approach and emphasizing verbal de-escalation techniques. Employs therapeutic non-violent physical interventions as a last resort.
- Responds to emergent situations by calling appropriate code and assisting the care team in accordance with unit/program guidelines.
- As part of the interdisciplinary team, participates in team meetings as directed and provides feedback on observations related to resident care provided for designated residents.
- Completes various forms such as activity and incident reports by methods such as writing a detailed account and explanation of actions to document incidents within the established policies and guidelines.
- Observes residents, identifies potential emergency situations and develops short-term strategies to deal with such situations. Reports significant observations such as resident discomfort and/or pain, unusual incidents and/or accidents and feedback from the resident into the care planning process to the Clinician.
- Performs a variety of clerical duties such as maintaining and updating computer and chart files for residents.
- Maintains and updates knowledge of workplace violence/aggression prevention and de-escalation theory and practice.
- Participates in quality improvement activities. Makes recommendations regarding processes/procedures that are trauma informed and resident centered to Manager and/or inter-professional team members with a view to violence prevention and emergency response practices. Participates in orientation of new staff regarding site emergency procedures.
- Acts as a member of the on-shift response team for the site's fire, safety and security functions and intervenes in fire, safety and security related complaints/hazards, including non-clinical emergencies and aggression; mitigates identified risks to the health care team.
- Carries out responsibilities in accordance with health and safety requirements. Immediately reports unsafe situations by notifying supervisor or other appropriate personnel.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
