As an integral member of our dynamic, collaborative team in the fire management program, you will have the opportunity to address our increasingly complex future fire management challenges as the Fire Operations Supervisor for the Timmins Fire Management Headquarters located at 5520 Hwy 101 East, South Porcupine ON

Please note:
This position is headquartered in Timmins, Ontario. However, travel within the region is required. In addition, operational needs may require weekend work.

About the Branch

The Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services Branch provides forest fire management services for the province including fire management policies and strategies, fire prevention and detection, and the basic resources for managing forest fires; aviation flight and maintenance crews and equipment in support of forest fire and natural resources management, and other specialized aviation services, including non-scheduled air transport to all government ministries and agencies; and emergency management in response to forest fires, floods, drought/low water, dam failures, erosion, soil and bedrock instability, crude oil and natural gas exploration, natural gas and hydrocarbon underground storage, and salt solution mining emergencies.

You will contribute to the achievement of team goals by:


• Lead, plan, coordinate and implement the operational and technical aspects of the fire management program.


• Lead and coach a team of professional and technical staff. Ensure team members possess the right skills and competencies to excel in their roles.


• Build strong partnerships and stakeholder involvement and awareness in fire management strategies and tactics, prevention and fuel management activities.


• Perform fire response system functions during peak fire season.


• Review expenditures to ensure adherence within assigned project funds.
What you bring to the team

Mandatory requirements


• Valid driver's licence class "G" or equivalent as recognized by the Province of Ontario.

Leadership Skills:


• You have an ability for developing, building and leading organizational capacity through inclusive, positive, and values-based leadership in areas of organizational design, recruitment, talent and performance management and labour relations matters.


• You can lead the planning and implementation of organizational development and complex change management initiatives.


• You can develop, coordinate, monitor and deliver training programs to staff and coordinate and monitor annual training initiatives, training needs, and opportunities.


• You can be responsible for the overall compliance with legislative statutes, collective agreements, government and ministry policies, directives, guidelines and commitments related to programs and services.


• You have demonstrated skills in managing financial budgets and human resources, including labour relations issues.

Technical Expertise:


• You have knowledge of and experience in fire behaviour, fire ecology and impacts of fire on landscape, suppression strategies, prescribed burning, weather indices and suppression equipment capabilities and requirements on fires


• You can interpret and apply relevant legislation such as the Forest Fires Prevention Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act and other regulations and guidelines.


• You have demonstrated technical skills and knowledge of resource management theories and practices.

Program Management Skills:


• You have knowledge of change management principles and best practices and demonstrated experience in leading change initiatives.


• You have knowledge of budgetary and financial processes to prepare, implement fiscal and performance budgets, multi-year and annual work plans, and monitor/report on budget allocations.


• You can analyze and interpret findings and make appropriate decisions.


• You have good judgment and political acuity to deal with complex and sensitive issues with tact and diplomacy.

Communication and Relationship Management Skills:


• You can provide guidance and advice to elicit information, prepare reports and liaise with a variety of people of diverse backgrounds and skills.


• You have proven communication, conflict management and interpersonal skills to establish and maintain professional working relationships.


• You have strong presentation and communication skills to provide customer service, make presentations, hold open houses and deliver training courses, workshops and seminars.


• You have strong written communication skills to prepare, review, analyze and develop operational plans, processes, tools, and briefing materials.


• You excel at building strong relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders.
