This role is critical for the installation, repair, and connection of water mains and sewer systems. The successful candidate will be a technical expert in Winnipeg's specific municipal connection standards and a proficient operator of wheeled excavators.Key Responsibilities

  • Machine Operation: Expertly operate a John Deere wheeled excavator to dig trenches, load trucks, and perform precise excavations around live underground utilities.
  • Connection Expertise: Execute water and sewer service connections in strict accordance with the City of Winnipeg's Standard Construction Specifications (e.g., proper use of PVC SDR 28 pipe, service tees, and saddles).
  • Trenching & Shoring: Dig and grade trenches to required depths and slopes while ensuring all safety protocols for shoring and trench boxes are followed to prevent cave-ins.
  • Maintenance: Perform daily pre-operational checks, lubrication, and minor maintenance on the John Deere unit to ensure optimal performance.
  • Site Collaboration: Work closely with ground crews and pipelayers to guide pipe placement, interpret hand signals, and ensure the integrity of new connections.

Required Qualifications

  • Experience: Minimum of 2 years of professional experience in underground utility installation and pipelaying.
  • Equipment Mastery: Proven ability to operate wheeled excavators (specifically John Deere models) in tight urban spaces and near existing infrastructure.
  • Winnipeg Standards: In-depth knowledge of City of Winnipeg Water and Waste Department regulations, including permit requirements and material standards.
  • Licensing: Valid Province of Manitoba Class 5 Driver's License (Class 3 preferred).
  • Safety: Current certification in Ground Disturbance and First Aid/CPR is highly preferred.

Skills & Attributes

  • Ability to read and interpret civil engineering blueprints and GIS utility maps.
  • Physical stamina for outdoor work in various Winnipeg weather conditions.
  • Strong communication skills to coordinate with City of Winnipeg inspectors and site supervisors.

Job Types: Full-time, Permanent

Pay: $70.00-$80.00 per hour
