At AdaptAbilities, practicum students play an important role in supporting program delivery and participant engagement. Without your help, we wouldn't be able to give our participants and their families the safe, caring, and inclusive environment they need to grow, succeed, and belong
The Position:
Our practicum students are allies and ambassadors. They work front line and are pivotal to the creation of a safe, caring, and community-enriched life for the individuals and families who hire us. Thoughtful program planning and implementation supports participants to connect with their communities, establishing real relationships and creating meaningful days and lives. They act with integrity, are open to growth, live our purpose, cultivate teamwork, and put forth an extraordinary effort to empower people with diverse abilities and their families to grow, succeed, and belong.
- Assist AdaptAbilities employees in providing care and support to participants
- Support goal-directed respite programs and services
- Engage in meaningful interactions with participants, fostering a positive and inclusive environment
- Work under the guidance of the Program Supervisor, who will assign duties based on your skills and interests
- Support increased participant ratios when necessary, contributing to a more dynamic program
- All students are provided training in accordance with the OH&S Act to ensure they can carry out their duties safely and effectively
As part of our frontline team, practicum students help deliver goal-directed respite programs and services, making a significant impact on the lives of those we serve. This is an opportunity to make a difference by contributing to meaningful interactions and supporting individuals in a safe and enriching environment. The current practicum positions we have available are:
Centre-Based Group Programs
Centre-based year-round programs provide families with respite care whenever they need it, including PD days, after school, evenings or weekends. Our centre-based programs support the needs of participants, providing opportunities for fun, inclusiveness, and independence. Participants engage with the community and make friendships by participating in these thoughtfully designed and goal-oriented programs.
- Community Connect provides adults ages 20+ individualized, person-centered programming, focused on personal strengths, interests, and desires. People build confidence and connection with community through meaningful and purposeful activities, volunteerism, and employment opportunities.
- Hearts In Action (HIA) provides programming year-round and during summer months for children 3+ and adults. Programming provides fun and meaningful activities that support the growth of real relationships and belonging.
- Out of School Care (OS) and High School Transition (HST) - The OS program is designed for children aged 12 to 17, who require a little extra support after school and are no longer able to access a daycare. Children under the age of 12 are accepted on an individual basis. High School Transition supports individuals 18+ who are continuing their high school education. Participants will begin to explore independence through experiential learning opportunities.
- Weekend Respite provides individuals age 3+ with high-quality care in a safe, supportive, and fun environment, while parents run errands, take an essential break, or enjoy coffee with a friend.
BeYou
In partnership with the City of Edmonton, AdaptAbilities' group respite programs are available in community recreation centres. These programs provide youth (pre-teen and teen) with a high level of independence to socialize, increase independence, and have fun.
Qualification:
- Minimum education requirement of a High School Diploma and enrolled in Post Secondary program such as Disability Studies, Community Support Work, Social Work, Psychology, Child and Youth Care, Addictions and Community Services, or other Human Services Field.
- Experience working with individuals with diverse abilities is an asset
- Excellent written and verbal communication in English
- Strong organizational skills and problem-solving abilities
- Flexible, comfortable working independently and collaborating as a team
- Clear Police Information Check, and Intervention Record Check is required
