Your Opportunity
In accordance with Letter of Understanding #3 – Research Projects, and under the direct supervision of the College Professor, the Research Assistant assists and supports the supervisor with research-related activities pertaining to the professor's professional background and within the supervisor's research areas of interest and expertise.
Functions and Duties
The Research Assistant will assist the supervisor by performing the following duties:
Assists with research for educational purposes.
Assists in identifying perspective subjects for research.
Assists in researching information for grants, research grants and research papers.
Searches literature sources pertaining to the relevant areas of research.
Assists in collecting, recording, compiling, summarizing data, and disseminating information.
Participates in research activities related to the subject area being investigated such as events, interviews, reading articles, listening to speakers.
Performs other duties as assigned
Position Specific Functions
RA Duties:
- Collating standard operating procedures for the REB, removing superfluous content, and creating a table of contents.
- Updating ethics forms, based on suggestions from the REB.
- Creating templates for researchers to respond to reviewers, for the decision of "approved subject to modification/clarification".
- Organizing a spreadsheet with researcher names from the past two years to verify whether projects are completed or need to be renewed.
- Researching what other colleges present on their websites relating to when human ethics is required and investigating the murky boundary between Scholarship of Teaching and Learning projects and human research projects.
Additional Duties if Time Permits:
- Helping to identify exemplars of completed forms and consent documents. Removing personal contact information.
- Creating "how to" videos (or documents) that walk researchers through the application process.
Education and Experience
Students with a minimum of one-year post-secondary education in the specified educational program listed below.
Prior work experience is an asset.
Skills and Abilities
Current knowledge in research methodology for educational purposes.
- Excellent research skills with the ability to synthesize data/information and develop/deliver findings and recommendations.
- Proficiency in the use of a variety of computer software applications.
- Works effectively both independently and as part of a team
- Well-developed organizational skills.
- Detail-oriented.
- Excellent communication skills to maintain effective correspondence with professors and partners
- Excellent time management skills to coordinate research and academic activities
Position Specific Education and Experience
To be eligible applicant must be enrolled in a post-secondary program at Okanagan College, or be a recent (within 6 months) graduate of an OC program.
- Experience in research ethics preferred (including a TCPS2 Certificate).
- Ability to summarize data succinctly.
- Competence with Word and Excel.
- Ability to focus, concentrate, and notice fine details
