Toronto, Ontario, Canada Thomson Reuters Full time US$116,900 - US$217,100
New Position: This position is open due to an existing vacancy to support our evolving business needs.

About Thomson Reuters and CoCounsel for Government

Are you a seasoned DevOps leader looking to drive technical strategy and innovation in a highly regulated environment? At Thomson Reuters, we're committed to empowering professionals with the insights and tools they need to make informed decisions. Our CoCounsel for Government team is at the forefront of this mission, and we're seeking an experienced Lead DevOps Engineer to set the technical direction for our team.

As a Lead DevOps Engineer on our CoCounsel for Government team, you'll play a pivotal role in defining and maintaining robust system architectures, mentoring engineers, and ensuring our solutions for government clients are secure, scalable, and compliant.

About the Role
In this opportunity as Lead DevOps Engineer, you will:

  • Define and maintain scalable system architectures leveraging AWS (preferred) or any major cloud provider (GCP/Azure) (with an emphasis on CloudFormation or equivalent Infrastructure as a Code technology), container orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes (EKS/GKE/AKS), serverless (Lambda, ECS, App service, cloud run), compute (EC2, virtual machines) etc.)

  • Collaborate with the Engineering Manager to align DevOps priorities and practices with business and product goals.

  • Write and review production-grade Python code for automation, tooling, and backend services, applying best practices and a strong appreciation for static typing.

  • Oversee CI/CD pipelines, ensuring security, compliance, and reliable deployments in AWS GovCloud or other AWS environments.

  • Guide and mentor engineers at all levels, providing code reviews and technical coaching to foster growth and excellence across the team.

  • Champion DevOps methodologies within the team, driving a culture of collaboration, continuous improvement, and proactive problem-solving.
Lead and participate in incident response and root cause analysis, ensuring lessons learned are incorporated into process and tooling improvements.

About You
You're a fit for the role of Lead DevOps Engineer if your background includes:

  • 6+ years in DevOps, Site Reliability Engineering, or a related discipline, with a proven track record leading complex cloud and container-based projects in enterprise or regulated environments.

  • Demonstrated technical leadership and experience mentoring engineers, influencing technical direction, and establishing best practices.

  • Deep understanding of AWS (preferred) or any major cloud provider (GCP/Azure) (with an emphasis on CloudFormation or equivalent Infrastructure as a Code technology), container orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes (EKS/GKE/AKS), serverless (Lambda, ECS, App service, cloud run), compute (EC2, virtual machines) etc.)

  • Strong Python development skills, specifically for production-grade services or infrastructure tooling, and familiarity with typed Python or static typing principles.

  • Extensive knowledge of cloud design patterns for scalability, data management, resiliency, and disaster recovery, including event-driven architectures and distributed tracing.

  • Comprehensive understanding of cloud and application security, with hands-on experience implementing encryption, identity and access management, secrets management, and security automation in compliance with government regulations.

  • Extensive experience architecting and supporting enterprise-scale continuous delivery environments, leveraging advanced CI/CD automation, blue/green and canary deployments, and automated rollback mechanisms.

  • Hands-on experience with APM and observability tools such as Datadog, CloudWatch, Prometheus, Grafana, and Kibana for real-time monitoring and diagnostics.

  • Comfortable with a high level of autonomy and proactive leadership, thriving in a distributed, remote-first team environment.

  • Excellent collaboration and communication skills, able to work effectively across cross-functional, distributed teams and translate complex technical concepts for diverse stakeholders.
