This employment opportunity is restricted to Nunavut Inuit who reside in Pond Inlet only.
ResponsibilitiesReporting to the Principal, the Student Support Assistant, in cooperation with the Student Support Teacher and the classroom teacher, assist in implementing education programs for students in the class as required, supports the classroom teacher in behavior support strategies as requested, participates in instructional team and school team meetings as requested, provides personal care support as requested, participates in professional growth activities and acts in a professional manner.
The Student Support Assistant works under day-to-day guidance of the classroom teacher and Student Support Teacher to help the classroom teacher deliver the education program to his/her students, particularly those students whose education program requires accommodation and/or curriculum and plays an integral role in supporting the delivery of the education program and student progress.
The knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this job are usually obtained through a recognized High School Diploma. Effective verbal and written communication skills, interpersonal and time management skills are required for this position. The incumbent must also have basic computer skills, including Microsoft Office. This is a Highly Sensitive Position and a satisfactory Criminal Record Check, along with a clear Vulnerable Sector Check is required.
The Official Languages of Nunavut are Inuktitut, English and French. Applicants may submit their resume in any of the official languages of Nunavut. Fluency in more than one of Nunavut's official languages would be considered an asset. Knowledge of Inuit communities, culture, land, Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit, Inuktitut and experience working in a northern cross-cultural environment are also considered assets.
