Title: R&D Senior Chemist - Formulation Support & Stability Testing
Reports to: Supervisor – Formulation Support & Stability Testing
The Formulation Support & Stability Testing Senior Chemist assists and supports the development of new pharmaceutical dosage forms, in addition to improving existing products and procedures. This role is responsible and accountable for independently conducting chemical and physical laboratory tests on raw materials and R&D samples—such as in-process, finished product, stability, and pre-formulation samples—in addition to performing all standard chemist responsibilities. The Senior Chemist also works closely with the team in designing, planning, supporting, and executing all aspects of assigned projects using sound scientific rationale.
Key Job Responsibilities and Duties:
- Perform activities in the analytical laboratory to support the development of new products and analytical methodologies per departmental SOPs and ICH guidelines.
- Perform testing on release, experimental, and stability samples using both methods under development and validated methods, as per departmental SOPs and GMP guidelines.
- Execute protocols with guidance from scientists and supervisors.
- Provide analytical/problem-solving feedback based on scientific knowledge, creativity, and innovative ideas.
- Perform peer review of notebooks and data generated by other personnel in the Formulation Support and Stability Testing laboratory.
- Monitor, maintain, and calibrate analytical equipment.
- Ensure that all analytical activities meet Good Laboratory Practices.
- Check the availability of chemicals, reagents, apparatus, HPLC columns, solvents, etc., needed to carry out tasks in the analytical laboratory.
- Ensure all analytical activities comply with Good Laboratory Practices and company policies.
Education and Experience Requirements:
- Canadian equivalent to a Master of Science or Bachelor of Science degree, preferably in Pharmacy, Chemistry, or Pharmaceutical Chemistry.
- More than three years of relevant hands-on pharmaceutical experience in product development or quality control.
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience in analytical chemistry, including operating analytical instrumentation such as HPLC, UV/Vis, GC, and dissolution apparatus.
- Understanding of DOE principles, risk-based assessment tools, quality by design, method validation, and equipment troubleshooting is preferred.
- Ability to work independently or as part of a team.
- Highly motivated, with the ability to handle multiple projects and prioritize work.
- Excellent communication (oral and written) and interpersonal skills.
