Position Purpose: Seasonal Wildlife Care is responsible for assisting in the day-to-day care for the animals under close supervision and training. Seasonal Wildlife Care is also responsible for presenting educational talks and demonstrations for the public and answering queries of a general nature when asked by visitors. This position will assist and provide support in implementing the Strategic Plan.

Core Role Responsibilities:
  • Assist with the care and feeding of animals.
  • Assists with cleaning and furnishing exhibits and holding areas.
  • Assists with providing training and enrichment.
  • Assists with ensuring quarantine regulations are adhered to.
  • Assists with veterinary procedures, transport or relocation.
  • Conduct and document physical and behavioral observations.
  • Assist with outreach programs including shows, tours, and casual encounters.
  • Provide excellent customer service and contribute to the overall guest experience.
  • Provide progress reports to Toronto Zoo staff.
  • May be required to carry a 2-way radio.
  • May be required to work in any Wildlife Care area.
  • Follows all policies and branch instructions.
  • Attends appropriate training as required.
Technical Knowledge and Skills:
  • Must have completed or be enrolled in a post-secondary program in environmental science, conservation biology, animal care or zoology or other applicable animal-related program, or the equivalent amount of training and related experience.
  • Must have 1 – 2 years of proven experience in the same or similar position.
  • Experience in interpretive/outreach programs desirable.
  • Previous experience working with animals.
  • Demonstrated interest/desire to work with animals and learn to care for animals in zoological institutions.
  • Demonstrated interest in conservation and creating public awareness.
  • Able to work in varying climate conditions.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team setting.
  • Able to produce reports.
  • Ability to work in a safe manner.
  • Must ensure all applicable licenses and certificates remain valid and in good standing. Copies of licenses and certificates to be provided at time of hire and upon renewal.
  • Well-developed interpersonal skills, along with strong communications skills.
  • Working knowledge of the Ontario Occupational Health & Safety Act and WHMIS legislation an asset.
  • Must be knowledgeable in the use of computerized programs and systems.
  • Must be able to work weekends, shifts and holidays as scheduled.
  • Must be able to deal with staff and public in a courteous and efficient manner.
  • Capable of meeting the physical requirements of the position, including the ability to lift 25 kg (55 lbs).
