About the Role
Our Transportation Traffic Operations Department is looking for a regular full-time Traffic Technologist to join the team. You will provide technical input and support on matters relating to Transportation Engineering work, including planning, coordinating, reviewing, and designing detailed construction and traffic management plans, parking management, boulevard management, signing and pavement marking design, safety assessments, data collection and analysis, and public engagement. This position includes managing the District's streetlight assets, including capital replacement projects, operations, and maintenance. Other duties include coordinating with external agencies, contractors, and DNV Operations, supervising a small group of technical employees when necessary, and the delivery of transportation-related projects.
The successful applicant will possess:
- Considerable knowledge of the practices, methods, techniques, and equipment used in traffic engineering operations; along with considerable knowledge of the rules, regulations, by-laws, and policies governing or applicable to departmental traffic engineering operations.
- Sound knowledge of traffic engineering design principles and practices.
- Ability to plan, assign, supervise and review work of a small group of technical, operational, and clerical employees; train staff and participate in performance evaluations.
- Ability to relieve a superior of administrative detail and to coordinate work of the Traffic Operations Section with contractors, transit authorities, external agencies and internal departments.
- Ability to manage and review the design of traffic control signal systems, traffic plans, road markings and signs in accordance with applicable standards and best practices; to prepare cost estimates, specifications, maps and drawings using applicable software, review quotations and make related recommendations.
- Ability to deal effectively with the public, and to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of internal and external contacts.
- Ability to prepare and maintain a variety of technical reports, documents, statistics and related data.
- Ability to obtain, summarize and interpret data, and coordinate the conducting of field investigations and traffic studies.
- Ability to apply policy related to parking management, Street and Traffic bylaw, Development Services Bylaw, etc.
- Basic project management skills needed to successfully deliver transportation-related infrastructure projects.
Qualifications
You will have graduated from a diploma program from a recognized institute of technology in Civil Engineering Technology, plus have sound related experience, preferably as a Traffic Technician; certification or eligibility for certification as an ASTTBC AScT preferred; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Engineers In Training may be considered for this position. Proficiency in the use of Excel and other standard office software is essential, and experience with GIS would be considered an asset. A valid B.C. Driver's Licence is also required.

The pay range for this unionized position is $44.22 to $52.21 per hour (2024 rates)
Hours of Work:
35-hour work week (Compressed work schedule available)
