JOB TITLE: Full-time Flex Community Support Worker
JOB SITE: All Supportive Programs with a home base of our Richmond Winter Shelters, but may be deployed to the Burnaby Winter Shelter as needed.
EMPLOYEE CATEGORY: Full-time, Temporary (Until February 1, 2026)
SALARY RANGE: Grid 33– HEU – Community Subsector
DESCRIPTION:
As a Flex community support worker you are trained and able to work at any of our programs. You will have a home department but your assigned work location could change as often as daily. This position is key to supporting operations. The Progressive Housing Community Support Worker provides a range of supports, serving homeless/at risk individuals. The Community Support Worker is responsible for the daily operations of the facility including: intaking new participants into the program; updating client records; creating service plans with participants to support their goals. Support workers communicate effectively with clients and other staff; and maintain a clean safe and secure environment. The minimal barrier approach of the site will require excellent and flexible engagement skills. The Community Support Worker actively participates in building a skilled, cohesive, collaborative staff team, including demonstrating commitment to program principles. Flexibility may be required to meet the needs of the clients & mandate of the program.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor's Degree in relevant field such as Psych, Criminology or Social Work with:
- 2 year of related experience with emphasis on mental health, substance use homelessness and/or social services.
OR
- Diploma/Certificate in Social services or health with 3 years related experience with emphasis on mental health, substance use, homelessness and/or social services.
OR
- An equivalent combination of education and experience, including lived experience, may be considered.
AND
- Current First Aid and CPR certification.
- Naloxone Training.
- Non-Violent Crisis Intervention training.
- Valid Class 5 driver's license and access to a reliable vehicle.
KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provides a range of supports, serving homeless/at risk individuals.
- Support of clients who may be facing complex bio-psycho-social issues.
- Responsible for the daily operations of the facility including: intaking new participants into the program; food service; updating client records; communicating effectively with clients and other staff; and maintaining a clean safe and secure environment for staff and clients by participating in regular and timely needle sweeps.
- Coordinates with the participant to create a service and care plan. The minimal barrier approach of the site will require excellent and flexible engagement skills.
- Actively participates in building a skilled, cohesive, collaborative staff team, including demonstrating commitment to program principles; resolving conflict; assisting in orienting, training and mentoring of all staff, including casuals and peer supports.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Extensive knowledge and experience of working with marginalized groups of people living with mental health and substance use.
- Extensive knowledge in harm reduction and overdose response (Naloxone) as well as Knowledgeable about current trends in illicit substances.
- Strong communication, conflict resolution and de-escalation skills.
- Physical ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
- Active listening and ability to communicate effectively in spoken and written English.
- Outstanding patience, tolerance, and anger control.
- Ability to identify effective methods of behaviour control and compensatory strategies.
- Ability to follow direction and instruction.
- Emotional resilience and compassionate.
- Positive and friendly attitude.
