Toronto, Ontario, Canada Homebase Full time

Hi, Future Homie
At Homebase, you'll join a team that's bold, fast-moving, and obsessed with helping small businesses thrive. We build with empathy, act with urgency, and take big swings that drive real-world impact. Here, every Homie shows up to raise the bar, support one another, and celebrate wins as a team.

We're not just building an app—we're building unstoppable teams. So what do you say, are you in?

Your
Impact
Starts Here
We're looking for a
Senior Software Engineer, Backend-Focused,
to join our
Mobile Platform team
, the group responsible for the shared services, backend architecture, and platform capabilities that power Homebase's next-generation mobile experiences.

You'll design and scale the backend systems behind our mobile app—including APIs, orchestration layers, platform services, and the infrastructure that enables the team to deliver fast, reliable, high-impact features. Your work will accelerate our journey toward an
AI-powered mobile assistant manager
, supporting workflows like action consolidation, automated triage, and intelligent task routing.

If you're passionate about
Ruby on Rails
, care deeply about backend craftsmanship, love solving ambiguous platform problems, and want to shape the future of mobile experience at Homebase, we want to meet you.

These are the key ways you'll contribute and create impact in this role:

  • Design, build, and maintain scalable backend services in Ruby on Rails that power cross-team mobile workflows, including authentication, messaging, permissions, user actions, and notification routing.
  • Drive architectural design across platform services—evaluating tradeoffs, improving service boundaries, and enabling a more modular, resilient backend ecosystem.
  • Consolidate user requests into a centralized action board, enabling our mobile app to surface, prioritize, and automate managerial tasks.
  • Partner deeply with Mobile Platform engineers to create seamless API contracts, improve release triage processes, and support platform-wide backend reliability.
  • Identify and resolve performance bottlenecks, optimize query patterns, improve caching strategies, and elevate observability across critical services.
  • Improve developer velocity by refining technical standards, improving documentation, simplifying service integration points, and enabling other teams to build on top of platform services.
  • Mentor engineers on backend fundamentals, architectural decision-making, and operational excellence.
  • Apply AI tools to accelerate engineering workflows—including code generation, testing, debugging, documentation, observability insights, and prototyping.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with product managers, designers, and partner engineering teams to ship impactful customer experiences with speed and quality.

Role
The Foundation for Success -
These are the experiences and strengths that will set you up for success in this role:

  • 3-5 years of backend engineering experience, with a strong foundation in building production Rails applications.
  • Strong Ruby on Rails experience—including idiomatic Ruby, patterns, performance tuning, and familiarity with Rails internals.
  • Deep understanding of object-oriented programming, domain modeling, and API design.
  • Strong experience with SQL, relational data modeling, and schema design for performance and scalability.
  • Experience designing and maintaining distributed systems or platform services that support multiple client teams (mobile, web, or cross-functional).
  • Comfort with logging, monitoring, alerting, and reliability tooling to diagnose and prevent production issues.
  • Experience with automated testing (RSpec or similar), CI/CD pipelines, and release management.
  • Ability to navigate ambiguity, propose solutions, and drive architectural decision-making.
  • AI fluency—you experiment with AI tooling, integrate automation into your workflow, and continuously improve your development velocity.

The Homie Way -
These principles guide everything we do—from how we work and make decisions to how we show up for each other.
