Position Job Title: Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Instructor

Location: VaCC Surrey Campus

Reports To: Campus Director

Employment Type: On-Call, Casual

Compensation: $30–$32 per hour

The Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Instructor is responsible for delivering high-quality, student-centered training focused on proactive de-escalation, safe intervention techniques, and trauma-informed practices. This role supports students in developing the confidence and practical skills required to manage real-world crisis situations with professionalism and empathy. As an on-call instructor, you will provide instructional coverage as needed to support program delivery at the Surrey campus.

The Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Instructor will be responsible for:

  • Delivering instruction that meets module and program objectives as outlined in the curriculum.
  • Facilitating demonstrations, simulations, and hands-on skill-building activities related to crisis prevention and intervention.
  • Evaluating student performance fairly and consistently through assessments, observation, and timely feedback.
  • Contributing to the development and improvement of curriculum and instructional resources to ensure content remains current and relevant.
  • Supporting campus administrative functions, including attendance tracking, student documentation, and instructor meetings as required.
  • Maintaining a safe, inclusive, and trauma-informed classroom environment.
  • Participating in College and Program activities when scheduled, including professional development and campus initiatives.
  • Monitoring and reviewing students during practicum and/or clinical placements (as required by the program), offering mentorship and performance feedback.

To be successful in this position, individuals must be committed to developing, maintaining, and demonstrating the following:

Education and Experience
  • Degree, diploma, or recognized credential in a human services–related field (e.g., Social Work, Psychology, Counseling, Community Support, Behavioral Sciences, Health Sciences).
  • A minimum of 2 years of relevant professional experience with recognized NVCI or crisis intervention certification, or 10+ years of professional experience in the field.
  • Minimum 270 hours of specialized training in areas such as addictions, mental health, crisis response, behavioural intervention, or trauma-informed practice.
  • Demonstrated industry expertise supported by professional references.
  • Eligibility for certification with the Canadian Addiction Counselors Certification Federation as an International Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor (ICADC).
  • Experience in frontline crisis response, community support, or clinical environments is considered an asset.

  • Strong industry knowledge and commitment to ongoing professional development.
  • Understanding of adult learning principles and interest in multi-modal teaching methods.
  • Excellent oral and written communication, presentation, and facilitation skills.
  • Ability to motivate and support students with diverse backgrounds and learning needs.
  • High level of professionalism, sound judgment, and commitment to quality service delivery.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with campus staff and instructional team members.
  • Ability to respond appropriately to student needs, provide constructive feedback, and support equitable learning outcomes.
  • Comfort using educational technology, including learning management systems and digital teaching tools.
  • Effective time-management and organizational skills, particularly in an on-call instructional environment.
