The SAFE Society Transition House in Salmon Arm is seeking a passionate individual with experience in the social service sector to provide frontline crisis intervention support in the Transition House.
Located in the beautiful Secwépemcul'ecw (Shuswap) region of British Columbia, the Shuswap Area Family Emergency Society (SAFE Society) is a registered charitable society that provides a broad spectrum of services to persons who are impacted by abuse. The SAFE Society works from an intersectional feminist and trauma-informed philosophy.
Classification: Transition House Worker, Grid 10
Schedule: Fridays 7:00am-3:00pm, unpaid break
Saturdays and Sundays 7:00am-3:00pm, paid break
Hours: 23 hours per week, plus on-call shifts if desired and weekend backup once fully trained.
Start date: December 15, 2025, or as soon as scheduling allows.
Wage & benefits: Wage range $25.95-$29.76 per hour as per 2024 CSSEA Wage Grid.
Extended Health, EFAP, Group Life Insurance, AD&D and Long-Term Disability are provided upon completion of the probationary period. Municipal Pension Plan is also provided once eligible, as per SAFE policy.
Job Summary
A crisis intervention support worker is responsible for providing emotional support to women, including trans and gender diverse women, who are survivors of abuse - physical, emotional, financial, spiritual or sexual. A CISW helps remove barriers and increase support to those impacted by abuse or who live in fear in their own homes. The Transition House program runs under the auspices of the Shuswap Area Family Emergency Society (SAFE). The Society mission is "To end violence in the Shuswap."
The purpose of this position is to keep the women, with or without children, as safe and comfortable as possible while residing at the shelter. It is understood that we are a lower barrier shelter and clients who come in will have multiple barriers including addictions, mental health issues, abuse, isolation and are at risk of homelessness.
This position is open to all applicants who identify as a woman+, including those of diverse gender expression/identities, trans and Two Spirit individuals, as gender is a bona fide occupational requirement of this position.
Qualifications and Experience
Diploma in a related human/social service field or equivalent.
Minimum one year of recent experience and/or equivalent combination of education, training and experience that involved crisis intervention work and/or support counselling work.
First Aid Certification through WorkSafeBC or Occupational First Aid Level 1 or equivalent. Training may be provided for the right candidate.
Knowledge of the dynamics of domestic violence/abuse and appropriate safety planning.
Experience/knowledge of non-profit societies and current women's issues.
Capable of completing physical tasks, including basic cleaning and lifting/carrying an assortment of items.
Use of an automobile is required for job duties. The successful candidate must have access to a reliable vehicle with appropriate insurance (reimbursed by the employer as necessary, in accordance with policy).
Proven ability to work cooperatively with service providers in the community.
Satisfactory criminal record check, including working with vulnerable sector.

Job Duties:
Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Crisis intervention and emotional support for Transition House Residents, nonresidents, drop-in clients, booked appointment resident and crisis calls.
Provide initial assessments, intakes and safety planning.
Providing information and referrals to other community resources including housing, doctor and other counselling programs.
Identifying and communicating daily childcare needs for each family in the transition house.
Support for childminding should mother/guardian require attendance at court or other business meetings where they cannot take the child(ren) with them.
Referring mothers to internal and external Outreach Services for additional emotional support for parenting children who have been exposed to violence.
Coordinate and write up referrals to PEACE Program for mothers to access support and parenting information upon exiting the Transition House.
Help create a child-centred, safe space both inside and outside at the Transition House.
Assisting clients with day-to-day activities wherever possible, such as medical attention nutritional & clothing requirements and locking up medication.
Help Coordinator and senior staff by recording all the data required for statistics which includes updating client files and signing off intakes.
Help communicate and transfer client information from shift to shift.
Clean and Maintain Transition House and Pet Shelter as required.
Answering phones and maintaining logbook.
Answering door and accepting donations.
Organizing and documenting donations (food, clothing and others) and thanking donors when required. Sorting and storing, including clearing of seasonal items.
May be required to take calls and provide backup assistance for evening, overnight and weekend emergencies requiring more than one staff person at the Transition House
Reporting any safety concerns to supervisor immediately, in writing,

Is able to handle confidential information about clients.
Demonstrates strong cultural competency and socially inclusive practice.
Can work independently 24/7 in a Transition House
Able to set security/reset systems and mechanical door locks.
Can function independently and under pressure in a setting that deals with high-risk clients who have been exposed to violence and who may also have addiction and mental health issues.
Is able to share office space with others and work in a team setting.
Can work in a high-stress and fast-paced environment that deals with trauma, abuse and violence.
Has proven ability to work cooperatively with service providers in the community.
Is able to function independently, and frequently under pressure, in an often chaotic environment while managing multiple projects and deadlines
Is able to use Office 365 and Payworks payroll system.
Is efficient in Word and other computer-related tasks that will assist clients in receiving up-to-date rental housing applications and program information.
Understands and is able to use general office equipment.
