The Public Guardian and Trustee of Saskatchewan (PGT) manages the financial and property affairs of incapable adults, monitors other property guardians, investigates allegations of financial abuse of vulnerable adults, administers deceased estates, and protects the legal and financial interests of minors.

The PGT is seeking a confident, ethical, and organized individual for an interesting and challenging Accounting Supervisor position.

Reporting to the Chief Financial and Operating Officer, this position will draw on extensive accounting, auditing, investment, and tax knowledge with a minimum of five years' experience and will be responsible for:

  • Supervising the daily activities of the PGT's accounting staff and ensuring financial transactions comply with established accounting standards; leading audits of these transactions; completing daily reconciliations; updating procedures to ensure adequate internal controls; completing complex month-end processes that require time-sensitive accounting reconciliations and entries; and assisting in the preparation of the PGT's annual financial statements, including liaising with the Provincial Auditor's office during the audit process.
  • Preparing personal income tax plans and returns for clients; serving as an expert on personal income tax issues, including researching updates to Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) tax policy; and performing complex reconciliations of PGT investment income for income tax purposes.
  • Completing reporting for the PGT's common fund, including the quarterly distribution of investment dividends and capital gains as outlined in the PGT's Regulations.
  • Serving as the knowledge expert for the PGT's Guardian Financial system, including system maintenance, participation on working committees, and initiating and testing upgrades.
  • Preparing reports and financial analyses to support PGT decision-making, responses to referrals, and other information needs.

A thorough knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles and auditing standards, the design and maintenance of internal controls, financial system maintenance, and income tax preparation is critical to this position. You will have excellent written and verbal communication skills to interact with clients and service providers, financial institutions, and to develop and maintain policies and procedures related to the management of client assets. You will be required to interpret acts, regulations, policies, and procedures, and correct and approve complicated estate accountings.

The knowledge and skills for this position are typically obtained through a university degree. However, a minimum of five years' relevant experience in accounting, auditing, taxation, financial system maintenance, and investments will also be considered.
