The Ministry of Municipal Affairs assists municipalities in providing well-managed, collaborative, and accountable local government to Albertans. 

Our main responsibilities are:

•    Funding supports for municipalities.

•    A system that strives to ensure appropriate safety standards for the construction and maintenance of buildings and equipment.

•    Protections for new home buyers and required licensing for home builders.

•    Province-wide support for access to public library services for Albertans.

•    Management of about 2.6 million acres of public land in the province's three Special Areas.

•    Independent review and decisions on local matters by the Land and Property Rights Tribunal.

Role Responsibilities


•    Provide expert electrical technical advice and interpretation based on the Canadian Electrical Code (CSA C22.1) to municipalities, industry professionals,
     government bodies, utilities, manufacturers, and the public.

•    Deliver technical guidance related to the Alberta Electrical Utility Code for electrical and communication utilities operating in Alberta.

•    Support and mentor Safety Codes Officers and accredited entities in the application and interpretation of the Safety Codes Act, regulations, codes,
     standards, and DAOs.

•    Advise on certification matters including Electrical Workers, Master Electricians, equipment approvals, and special inspections.

•    Provide technical support to internal Government of Alberta branches, divisions, and departments.

•    Analyze electrical incident data and prepare reports and statistics related to electrical safety in Alberta.

•    Represent Alberta on national committees, sub-councils, and standards development groups as required.

•    Collaborate with colleagues and industry stakeholders to develop technical materials, review industry submissions, and support outreach and engagement
      initiatives.

•    Perform other duties as required to support departmental objectives.

Qualifications

Requirements:

•    A journey person electrician certification recognized in Alberta and six years of relevant work experience after receiving that certificate;

•    An electrical engineering technologist diploma recognized in Canada and eight years of relevant work experience after receiving that diploma; or

•    An electrical engineering degree recognized in Canada and eight years of relevant experience after receiving that degree.

•    ESCO or ability to become an ESCO in Alberta

Note: The relevant work experience must include on-site field work related to wiring methods and installations.

Assets:

•    Several years of well rounded diverse experience in the construction industry

•    Several years experience in  the administration of the Safety Codes Act and Regulations

•    Excellent interpersonal  and organizational skills

•    Ability to work independently and in team environments

•    Ability to interpret and apply legislation

•    Ability to write and apply legislation

•    Ability to understand the impact of decisions on all parties when dealing with issues

•    Knowledge of the departments policies and procedures

•    Strong writing and effective communication skills including the ability to explain complex situations

•    Knowledge of department policies  and procedures for monitoring and mentoring

•    Understanding of FOIP and its impact on records management  and information technology programs

•    Knowledge of the department and business plan

•    The ability to communicate successfully with a wide and diverse range of clients

•    The unique ability to read between the lines and determine what our clients are asking before providing information and answers that impact other
      jurisdictions and authorities
