The Climate Change Secretariat (CCS) is the Government of Nunavut's (GN's) voice on climate change. Housed within the Department of Environment (ENV), CCS coordinates climate change action across the GN and advises departments and agencies on how to incorporate climate change initiatives into their work. 

Reporting to the Manager, Adaptation (Manager), the Adaptation Coordinator (Coordinator) will play a key role in the development and implementation of adaptation initiatives within the GN to build a more climate resilient Nunavut. The Coordinator will work with stakeholders including GN Departments, the Federal Government, Inuit organizations, municipal governments, and community groups to advance climate change adaptation in Nunavut.  It is the responsibility of the Coordinator to provide support in research, policy development, program management, and coordination to their Manager. This position is located in Iqaluit though their reach is beyond Iqaluit, resulting in the potential to travel throughout and outside the territory. The Coordinator should have a strong understanding of the Territory, knowledge of its people and its culture and appreciation of Inuit Societal Values.

Responsibilities

The Coordinator will work on climate change adaptation projects within the Climate Change Secretariat, provide direction to project contractors, prepare written and oral briefing material, and prepare project content for the Nunavut climate change website. The Coordinator will work with GN Departments to integrate climate change adaptation in processes, activities, and decision making, and will support the delivery of adaptation training for GN Departments, including preparing materials, booking venues, and securing Inuit knowledge holders, and interpreters. The Coordinator will also work with the Adaptation team to coordinate and chair inter-departmental climate change working groups. 

The Coordinator will administer federal climate change adaptation funding, participate in the development and coordinate the implementation of climate change funding agreements across the GN, communicate deliverable deadlines and tracking deliverable submissions, and coordinate  the financial management of funds including developing Contribution Agreements, Memorandums of Understanding, financial reports, and audits. The Coordinator will also provide research and analysis on climate change adaptation topics, carry out research and analysis related to territorial, national, and international adaptation issues, and provide oral briefings to senior management on completed adaptation research. 

Qualifications

The knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this job are usually obtained through a Diploma in Social Science Sciences, Core Sciences (Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics or General Environmental Studies), Environmental Conservation, Public Administration, Economics, Planning, Engineering or Environmental Sciences from a recognized institution, plus two (2) years of related experience. Experience in project management is an asset. An undergraduate Degree in a related field is also an asset.

The Official Languages of Nunavut are Inuktut, English and French. Applicants may submit their resume in any of the official languages of Nunavut. Fluency in more than one of Nunavut's official languages would be considered an asset. Knowledge of Inuit communities, culture, land, Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit, Inuktut and experience working in a northern cross-cultural environment are also considered assets.
