JOB DESCRIPTION

Purpose

This role is a hybrid position responsible for providing proactive leadership and instruction in Food Safety  (70%) and Environmental Health and Safety (30%) within the assigned site. As the main point of contact for Food Safety and EHS at the assigned site, this role will assist in driving corporate food safety and EHS strategy at the local site to mitigate food safety and work safety-related risk. The incumbent will oversee the implementation of the requirements, policies and procedures related to food safety and EHS, facilitate documents control and reporting, support in tracking and communicating Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and more.

Responsibilities

  • Execute on all corporate food safety related strategies, policies and procedures; maintain open communication with all related departments to address the identification of food safety hazards and process improvement opportunities.
  • Manage Food Safety Preventive Controls Program, inclusive of Pre-requisite Programs, HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points) Plan, Food Safety Policies and specific SOPs.
  • Completes verification activities associated with all Preventive Controls programs.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable food safety regulatory requirements (Federal, Provincial and Local).
  • Handle and oversee the product recall process to ensure timely communication and execution of product recalls and completion of related documentation.
  • Oversee vulnerability assessment and develop mitigations for the Food Defense Program to ensure requirements are carried out in a timely manner.
  • Manage Sysco's participation in Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI), audits by SQF, independent third parties, customers, internal, and regulatory entities.
  • Maintain food safety and EHS related records, documents and files.
  • Conduct food safety observations of key associates performing food safety activities.
  • Provides data to support reporting on Operating Company Food Safety compliance and overall performance against food safety KPIs.
  • Track training programs and deliver employee training for new and existing members.
  • Conduct routine audits to ensure food safe conditions of FreshPoint products.
  • Manage food safety-related complaints from customers through prompt follow ups, thorough investigations and providing resolution when required.
  • Collaborate with Regional Food Safety Director to complete annual Food Safety Program reassessments and implement required changes at the local site.
  • Assist and coordinate with incident investigations including, but not limited to First Aid, WorksafeBC, ICBC and near misses
  •  Coordinate JHSC Meetings and monthly inspections
  • •Conduct Job Hazard Analysis and Risk Assessments
  • Assist in developing safe work practices & procedures
  • Complies with Sysco's Food Safety Policy and procedures to ensure food safety, quality and legality requirements are met.
  • Is willing to work safely with minimal environmental impact and understands the importance of reporting all hazards, incidents, and environmental spills immediately to their Supervisor.
  • Understands that they play an integral role in their own safety and that of their colleagues and is willing to speak out when hazards are present.

Certifications

Education

  • College Diploma required.
  • Bachelor's degree (Food Science, Animal Science, Biological Science or related) preferred.
  • Technical proficiency in the areas of food safety, food microbiology, food chemistry, animal science, biology, food defense, bacteriology, food processing technologies, and food regulations & policy.
  • Certification in HACCP, auditing, GFSI is preferred

Experience

  • Associate's degree in related discipline or an additional 2 years of relevant experience in lieu of degree
  • Experience in Quality Assurance/Control, Food Safety, Supply Chain, EHS, or related discipline would be beneficial.
  • Knowledge of product traceability considered an asset.
  • Experience/knowledge of investigations and root cause analysis
  • Experience as a GFSI (SQF, BRC) practitioner is highly desirable.
  • Understanding of Food Safety regulations, laws, and best practices including those from SFCR and CFIA provincial/local entities.

Basic knowledge of food microbiology, food safety, and food defense
