Job Title: Shelter Support – Child and Youth Care Practitioner
Location: Toronto, Ontario
Job Type: Full-Time
About the Role:
We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Child and Youth Care Practitioner (CYCP) to join our shelter team in Toronto. In this role, you will provide direct support and supervision to youth in a shelter setting, ensuring their safety, dignity, and personal growth. The ideal candidate is someone with experience working with at-risk and homeless youth and is committed to supporting positive change in their lives.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide supervision and care to residents within the shelter environment.
- Ensure the safety and well-being of all residents at all times.
- Accurately document case notes and complete data entry in the Shelter Management Information System (SMIS).
- Support residents in developing and implementing individualized case plans in line with the City of Toronto Shelter Standards.
- Connect youth with appropriate community-based services and resources.
- Plan, deliver, and evaluate group programming for shelter residents.
- Complete administrative duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Diploma or Degree in Child and Youth Care, Social Work, or a related field (e.g., CYCP, CYC, BSW, SSW).
- Minimum of 1 year of experience working with youth or adolescents in a residential, transitional, or shelter setting.
- Understanding of the issues affecting homeless and street-involved youth, including trauma, mental health, substance use, and systemic barriers.
- Strong interpersonal, conflict resolution, and communication skills.
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Demonstrated ability to handle conflict and crisis situations with professionalism, patience, and sound judgment.
- Strong administrative, organizational, and computer skills.
Requirements:
- Valid First Aid/CPR certification.
- Valid UMAB and CPI certifications.
- Completion of suicide prevention and intervention training (as per Shelter Standards).
- Full COVID-19 vaccination (minimum 2 doses with a Health Canada approved vaccine).
