The Opportunity
The City of St. John's is presently accepting applications for Lifeguard/Instructors to work at the Paul Reynolds Community Centre and the H.G.R. Mews Community Centre.
Accountabilities
- Ensure that all rules and regulations are adhered to as they apply to aquatic and other program activities.
- To have full knowledge of the instructional programs offered and to instruct the appropriate skills/strokes and progression as set down by the Lifesaving Society program and any other program developed by the Recreation Division.
- Maintain direct contact with patrons and to communicate with them in an effective manner.
- Monitor designated pool areas and check change rooms, shower areas and steam/sauna area during all aquatic activities.
- Maintain a safe Aquatic environment at all times.
- Ensure the security of the pool area at all times, i.e., all public access locked when the pool is not being supervised.
- Maintain the cleanliness of the pool deck area, lifeguard room, and change rooms, i.e. picking up equipment and storing it in it proper place, picking up paper, band aids and cleaning pool, sauna/steam and change rooms.
- Be responsible for completing and submitting all necessary forms and reports such as progress cards, test sheets, statistical reports and other administrative duties as required.
- Report any difficulties, incidents or complaints immediately to the Head Lifeguard.
- Maintain all current aquatic qualifications necessary for the position.
- To have full knowledge of the Aquatic Emergency Procedures for the Recreation Division and to ensure all emergency equipment is available and operational.
- Perform the necessary set up and break down of activities for the various aquatics program and equipment.
- Attend in-service training and staff meetings as required.
The successful applicant will be required to participate in all training programs applicable to this position and other related work. Qualifications
- Minimum of 16 years of age as required under the Public Pool Regulations.
- Current Standard First Aid and CPR Level C
- Current Lifesaving Society National Lifeguard award
- Current Lifesaving Society Swim for Life Instructor Certificate
- Ability to communicate effectively with the public, coworkers, and supervisors.

Successful candidates must provide Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) Certificate of Conduct and Vulnerable Sector Check (or equivalent) dated no more than six months prior to their start date.
Working Conditions
- Aquatic conditions may be very hot and humid at times.
- Considerable time may be spent in the water swimming, teaching, training performing rescues or other duties.
- Frequently dealing with members of the public and a team of staff
- Flexible hours of work, including early mornings, evenings, and weekends.
Physical Requirements
- Walking, Standing, Lifeguarding, Instructing, maintaining focused attention and proper vigilance is required for extended periods of time in accordance with Lifeguard and Instructor industry and certification standards.
- Moderate physical effort when teaching swimming lessons or participating in training or certification programs.
- Lifting and handling of equipment is required, such as moving / lifting teaching platforms, lane ropes, and other pool equipment.
- Lifting and aiding swimming lesson participants as per Lifesaving Society Swim for Life Instructor standards.
- Completion of rescues, and provision of first aid as per National Lifeguard and industry standards which may require intense physical effort at times.
This position is classified as safety sensitive. The City of St. John's has a comprehensive Alcohol and Drug Policy to ensure fitness for work and the completion of a satisfactory alcohol and drug test is a mandatory pre-employment requirement.
Hours of Work
Hours will be on a call-in basis or scheduled based on program requirement.
Applicants must be members of the Canadian Union of Public Employees, Local 1289, or should be prepared to join the Union immediately upon appointment.
