Position Description:
Reporting to the Associate Vice President – Strategy, Planning, & Risk, this position provides leadership at the operational level and is responsible for overseeing all matters pertaining to George Brown College's insurance portfolio. This includes a leadership role managing claims, renewal of policies in consultation and coordination with GBC's insurance broker, providing expert advice to stakeholders across the organization on insurance consideration for identified activities and building collaborative relationships with insurance professionals in the sector.
Key Responsibilities:
- Insurance Operations / Management of Insurance Programs
- Provides direction for the development and implementation of cost-effective insurance programs for business operations, partners with the respective stakeholders to project and manage incidents and third-party claims in a timely manner to reduce the reputational and monetary damage.
- Plays an active role in the Strategic/Governance Committees: presents and reports to the Finance & Property (F&P) Committee, leads the insurance discussions at the Senior Management Committee (SMC) as well as supports the CFO, AVP Strategy, Planning, and Risk (AVP, SP&R), and other Corporate Management Committee (CMC) members in the preparation of Board materials.
- Collaborates with internal stakeholders to ensure that sound risk and insurance governance principals are developed at all levels of the organization.
- Provides quantitative/numerical analysis and research to generate recommendations and insights to drive outcomes.
- Develops new processes, enhances existing processes and ensures implementation for effective oversight of the claims management function; Works directly with insurers to respond to claims.
- Receives claims and discusses them with individuals named in claims. Assists insurance adjusters, lawyers, etc. in gathering information pertaining to claims and negotiating with the insurers to receive the best possible coverage based on the interpretation of the insurance clauses.
- Planning and Framework for Enterprise Risk Management
- Responsible to support the development, implementation, monitoring and maintenance of the GBC-wide risk management framework/program and initiatives that is aligned with GBC's strategic and business plans to enhance the culture of risk management and mitigation.
- Risk Operations
- Conducts college-wide, multi-disciplinary risk assessment and validation initiatives to ensure integration with GBC's strategic and business planning cycles.
- Works independently to manage ERM implementation engagements including risk identification by objective, risk assessment, risk response planning, setting risk tolerances/targets, engagement planning and reporting. Facilitates the ongoing creation and monitoring of plans with senior leaders and their risk working groups to reduce the top risks or the impact of these risks.
- Client Expertise/Advice Consultation and Guidance

Educational and Experience Requirements:
- Four-year degree from a recognized post-secondary institute in Business Administration, Accounting, Economics, Public Administration or related field.
- PECB Certified ISO 19600 Lead Compliance Manager (similar designation as CRM highlighted below) is required.
- Canadian Risk Management (CRM) or similar designation is required.
- Masters in Public Administration is preferred.
- Chartered Insurance Professional (CIP) is required.
- Minimum of five (5) years of compliance experience in commercial insurance. Experience at a post-secondary institution is a plus.

- Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills to develop excellent working relationships with senior management and external stakeholders (e.g., Government representatives).
- Demonstrated ability to manage complex projects with multiple stakeholders, changing expectations and unclear objectives.
- Challenging, investigative, influencing and presentational skills with senior management and in formal committee settings and experience with project delivery. Strong negotiation skills.
- High degree of self-motivation, resilience, adaptability and flexibility.
- Understanding of the Canadian insurance market.
- Excellent attention to detail and accuracy.
- Keen strategic thinking and business acumen.
- Sound knowledge of risk management policies, procedures and industry best practices.
- An interest in upskilling for digital world and technology trends, an openness to learning new tools and adapting how you work.
- Problem-Solving ability and comfort working with minimal supervision.
