Job Title: Health and Safety SpecialistJob Description

The Health & Safety Specialist plays a vital role in the development, implementation, and continuous enhancement of health, safety, and ergonomics systems. This role involves performing risk assessments, coordinating training, ensuring equipment safety, conducting ergonomic assessments, and maintaining compliance with OHSA standards. The Specialist also acts as a key driver in completing JHSC action items, leading cross-functional safety projects, and improving employee engagement in safety programs.

Responsibilities
  • Maintain and enhance the Health & Safety Management System.
  • Perform job hazard analyses, ergonomic assessments, risk assessments, and regular safety inspections.
  • Oversee compliance with machine guarding, lockout/tagout, PPE, chemical handling, and other safety standards.
  • Manage WSIB claims, return-to-work plans, and modified work programs.
  • Conduct ergonomic assessments in machining, assembly, material handling, and office environments.
  • Lead MSD prevention initiatives and discomfort reporting programs.
  • Recommend ergonomic improvements such as workstation redesigns, lift assists, tooling adjustments, and workflow changes.
  • Collaborate with Engineering and Maintenance to ensure ergonomic considerations in new equipment, tooling, and workstation installations.
  • Deliver ergonomic training on safe lifting, material handling, and proper workstation setup.
  • Track ergonomic trends and develop action plans to reduce strain and improve efficiency.
  • Coordinate and track mandatory safety training for equipment and safety protocols.
  • Assess training needs based on incident trends, ergonomic findings, and audit results.
  • Evaluate training effectiveness and reinforce training through toolbox talks and coaching.
  • Act as a certified management representative on the JHSC.
  • Prepare and manage JHSC meeting agendas, minutes, and action item logs.
  • Ensure completion of JHSC recommendations and corrective actions.
  • Lead safety projects such as ergonomics enhancements, machine guarding upgrades, noise reduction, and traffic flow improvements.
  • Conduct incident and near-miss investigations, including ergonomic-related root causes.
  • Monitor safety and ergonomic trends and propose preventive measures.
  • Implement engineering and administrative controls.
  • Maintain and test the emergency response plan, including drills and first aid readiness.
  • Ensure first-aid stations are stocked and responders are trained.
Essential Skills
  • Diploma or degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Kinesiology, Ergonomics, or Human Factors.
  • 3–5 years of experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Knowledge of industrial ergonomics, MSD prevention, OHSA, WSIB, and CSA standards.
  • Strong communication, training, and analytical skills.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Certification as a CRST or working toward CRSP is advantageous.
  • Experience with safety management, audit, and compliance.
  • Familiarity with construction and OSHA 30 is beneficial.
Work Environment

The position is based in Mississauga, ON, and requires working onsite five days a week. The Health and Safety Specialist reports to the Engineering and Maintenance Manager. This role is critical to building out numerous projects and involves interacting with company leaders to execute initiatives.
