Job Summary

The Research Coordinator provides support to Department members, including coordination of multiple research projects for the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology across multiple sites.

Organizational Status

Reports to the Associate Head(s) Research of the Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology. This position works directly with Associate Head(s), Research for daily tasks, and takes role related direction from them regarding ongoing research projects. Works with Principal Investigators, the research managers, coordinators, research nurses, statistical and computer consultants and clerical staff. This position maintains a collaborative relationship with the Women's Health Research Institute (WHRI) by attending bimonthly Community of Practice meetings to share lessons learned and explore opportunities for synergies and efficiencies.

Work Performed

Study Support:

  • Assists with all aspects of research projects for multiple Principal Investigators, including coordinating the planning, implementation, completion, and evaluation stages.
  • Assists with study documentation from the application stage on, and ensures that documentation requirements at all institutional levels are met and maintained.
  • Under the direction of the Principal Investigators, drafts and edits protocols to meet scientific and ethical integrity standards.
  • Under the direction of the Principal Investigators, collects study information, conducts analyses and develops auditing protocols to achieve quality assurance.
  • Under the direction of the Principal Investigators, drafts and submits ethics applications, liaises with UBC Research Ethics Board and Research Institutes on ethics approvals, and assists in resolving related issues.
  • Monitors project budgets within the context of granting agency guidelines, operational demands and resource constraints and uses best practice methods to thoroughly monitor and adhere to allocated budgets. Reports to Principal Investigators regarding budget deficits.
  • Assists with statistical analysis and/or interpretation of the results of statistical analyses as appropriate.

General Research Support

  • Supports the Associate Head(s), Research in information finding and data collection of Departmental research.
  • In conjunction with the Associate Head(s), Research, develops and disseminates content for research pages of the Departmental website.
  • Under the direction of the academic leads, coordinates the planning, implementation, and execution of departmental events such as the Fred Bryans Faculty Research Forum, Departmental Academic Day.
  • Supports the Resident Research Advisory Committee by coordinating activities associated with Resident research projects.
  • Drafts materials for presentation and publication, including sections of the Departmental annual report under the direction of the Associate Head(s), Research.
  • Collates Departmental Research Award applications, arranges adjudication committees and completes RPIFs as required.
  • Under the direction of the Associate Head(s), Research, coordinates a Community of Practice group for all research managers employed by PIs in the Department, and including all research managers at the WHRI.
  • Collates research opportunities within the Department for inclusion in the monthly newsletter to maximize potential for collaboration and funding success across research groups.
  • Promotes services provided by Department, UBC and Research Institutes to Department members.
  • Serves as a member at meetings of the Research Advisory Committee.

Consequence of Error/Judgement

The Research Coordinator is required to be knowledgeable of the Tri-Council Policy Statement: Ethical Conduct for Research Involving Humans. Any procedures or data recorded as part of a study must be reliable and accurate, reflecting the work performed. Strict confidentiality of all study participants must be adhered to. All activities involving participants are accountable to the Principal Investigator, the Department Head, and the OBGYN Departmental Research Support's governing professional organization.

The Research Coordinator will be directly responsible for errors, for reporting problems and mistakes in a timely way, and for correcting those errors. If errors were to be made, subsequent data analysis could be inaccurate.

Supervision Received

Associate Head(s), Research will assign projects to the Department Research Support. Once a project has been assigned the day to day project direction will be provided by PIs.

Supervision Given

May oversee research assistants, support staff or students as required.

Minimum Qualifications

Completion of a relevant technical program or a university degree in a relevant discipline and a minimum three years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Finance experience, including the development and oversight of budgets.

Experience with, or willingness to learn, WorkDay.

Knowledge of medical, clinical and research terminology.

Some experience in quantitative data analysis would be an asset

Ability to identify key results from scientific, statistical, and quantitative research findings an asset.

Experience with RedCap and other research/statistical software an asset.

Ability to provide guidance and direction to others regarding the interpretation and application of organizational clinical trial agreement policies and procedures.

Demonstrated organizational skills and ability to prioritize workload and work under time pressures to meet deadlines. Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively to resolve issues and to be flexible to meet and adapt to changes in organizational priorities.

Demonstrated analytical skills and the ability to exercise judgment within a range of established alternatives.
