Join the Mineral Development Branch at the Ministry of Energy and Mines and take on a role that blends environmental stewardship, adventure, and innovation. As aMine Hazards Technical Specialist, you'll help make Ontario safer by rehabilitating abandoned mine sites—while leveraging advanced GIS systems, drone technology, and other tech to transform how we work and deliver results.

Ontario's mining legacy is vast, but abandoned sites can pose serious risks to people and ecosystems. This role requires a strong understanding of theenvironmental impacts at legacy abandoned mines - from chemical contamination to physical hazards—and the ability to providesound technical advice to internal teams, contractors, and external stakeholders. You'll also help maintain and enhance Ontario'sAbandoned Mines Information System (AMIS) database, ensuring accurate hazard tracking and supporting evidence-based decisions for rehabilitation projects. And you will get to support and collaborate with an exceptional team of mine rehabilitation experts who are passionate about making Ontario safer and more sustainable.

About the job

As a technical specialist, you will:

  • Update and innovate: Maintain and enhance the AMIS database to keep Ontario's mine hazard information accurate and actionable.
  • Provide expert guidance: Offer technical advice on mine hazards and rehabilitation strategies to internal and external clients.
  • Field leadership: Conduct site assessments in remote areas, inspect hazards, collect samples, and perform audits under challenging conditions.
  • Collaborate and influence: Prepare related technical and administrative documents and detailed reports, develop and administer contracts for consultants/contractors and participate in working groups.
  • Champion safety: Respond to complaints, monitor rehabilitation plans, and ensure compliance with corresponding legislation and regulations.

Please note that you will be required to work irregular hours, travel in remote areas and conducting field assessments under adverse conditions.

What you bring to the team
Mandatory requirements

You must have a valid class 'G' driver's licence or equivalent, as recognized by the Province of Ontario to travel to remote and isolated areas. The offer of employment is conditional upon the successful candidate providing proof that s/he has a valid driver's licence upon being hired.

Specialized knowledge:

You have:

  • thorough knowledge of mine rehabilitation methods, materials, practices and related statutory and policy requirements.
  • knowledge of mineral exploration, mining land tenure, conducting site assessments and the potential chemical and physical impacts of a mining operation.
  • a good understanding of the Mining Act and associated regulations including land tenure related legislation and regulations.
  • knowledge of computer technology and related applications to manage database information and to organize and maintain abandoned mines information files and records.
Geographic Information Systems (GIS) expertise:

You have:

  • knowledge of specialized GIS applications and GIS principles, practices and techniques, including software applications (MLAS, Arcview, ArcGIS) and peripheral equipment (e.g. digitizers, scanners and printers) to produce, modify and clarify information on digital maps.
Communication and interpersonal skills:

You have:

  • communication skills to interact with stakeholders, conduct research for technical information, communicate ideas and information and deliver effective presentations.
  • interpersonal skills to provide tactful and diplomatic advice to stakeholders and relay the ministry's position on rehabilitation issues.
  • group leadership experience to assign work, train staff and ensure compliance with health and safety for rehabilitation project staff.
Analytical and organizational skills:

You have:

  • well developed analytical and problem solving skills to evaluate impacts of abandoned and/or inactive mines operations.
  • excellent planning and organization skills to prioritize work demands, maintain database materials and conduct site assessment, compliance and/or land tenure reviews in a timely manner.
