The Security Officer is responsible for ensuring the safety and security of the Band Office, including its employees, visitors, and property. Stationed at the security desk in the reception area, the officer serves as the first point of contact for all visitors and plays a key role in maintaining a safe, welcoming, and professional environment. The ideal candidate will be observant, dependable, and capable of handling a variety of situations with discretion and professionalism.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Monitor and patrol the Band Office premises to detect and deter unauthorized or suspicious activity.
  • Staff the security desk in the reception area, greeting visitors, verifying appointments, and ensuring proper sign-in procedures are followed.
  • Enforce security protocols and ensure compliance with safety regulations.
  • Respond promptly to alarms, emergencies, or incidents, and coordinate with emergency services when necessary.
  • Conduct regular inspections of doors, windows, and access points to ensure they are secure.
  • Maintain detailed and accurate logs of daily activities, incidents, and observations.
  • Monitor surveillance systems and report any irregularities or concerns.
  • Provide assistance to staff and visitors, including directions, information, and emergency support.
  • Collaborate with Band Office leadership and local law enforcement as needed.
  • Support the implementation and improvement of office security procedures.
  • Assist with crowd control and safety during community events or high-traffic periods at the Band Office.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES

  • High school diploma or equivalent; additional training or certification in security is an asset.
  • Previous experience in security, law enforcement, or a related field is preferred.
  • Strong observational and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.
  • Ability to remain calm and professional in high-pressure situations.
  • Physically fit and able to perform duties such as standing, walking, and patrolling for extended periods.
  • Familiarity with basic security systems and procedures.
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation preferred.
  • Knowledge of and respect for Mi'kmaq culture and community values is an asset.
