ADDICTION OUTREACH COUNSELLOR

Full-time Permanent

We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate individual to join our team as an Addiction Outreach Counsellor at Family Transition Place. Reporting to the Counselling Supervisor, the Addiction Outreach Counsellor plays a pivotal role in supporting women in lessening the consequences of substance use through counselling. The Addiction Outreach Counsellor will work with agency staff and the broader community to build capacity and support among existing service providers through the coordination and development of services.

Responsibilities:

1. Providing individual and group counselling services to women who engage in unwanted substance use or have in the past by:

  • Completing assessment of client's needs, goals for service, intervention plans and appropriate reports/documentation
  • Facilitating and supporting safety planning by clients
  • Administering program related assessment tools/screeners as appropriate (Danger Assessment, GAIN-SS, ADAT tools)
  • Coordinating and facilitating groups, facilitating transfer appointments to other programs or services as required

2. Maintaining electronic data recordings (i.e. service events, referral sources) according to agency and funder's requirement

3. Collaborating and advocating with referral sources and other community response systems

4. Providing occasional education / information presentations and some committee work

5. Participating in and assisting with the planning and organization of services by:

  • Maintaining appropriate client service-related documentation (progress notes, assessment reports, interim reports, service summaries)
  • Completing date-based recordings (i.e. service events) in Caseworks according to agency requirements to capture statistical requirements
  • Supporting students and volunteers, reporting on their performance to the Supervisor
  • Actively participating in team meetings
  • Working with the Supervisor to ensure proper safety and health standards are met
  • Being knowledgeable of, and informing team members about local community resources
  • Engaging fully and openly in supervision, keeping the Supervisor informed of any issues
  • Assessing the effectiveness of services based on women's feedback and evaluations.

6. Committing to the agency's core values of: Compassion, Integrity, Equity and Social Responsibility

7. Adhering to FTP policies and procedures and compliance with required legislative and regulatory requirements such as OHSA, AODA, etc.

8. Performing other duties or responsibilities as negotiated or assigned

Qualifications and Core Competencies:

  • Completed undergraduate level training in relevant social service discipline or completed Community College level training with experience in a closely related field

  • Eligible for registration with a Counselling/Social Work focused College or Regulatory body

  • No previous violations of breach of professional practice standards
  • More than 2 years' experience in the Addictions Field
  • Familiarity with the links between violence, trauma, addictions and mental health issues
  • Ability to incorporate into counselling an anti-oppression and women centred framework using a trauma focused lens/approach
  • Knowledge of issues of violence against women and children, including the intersection with mental health and addictions
  • Knowledge of a variety of therapeutic modalities and intervention strategies
  • Strong written and oral communication, case management and report writing skills
  • Ability to work well under pressure and within the context of a team structure and atmosphere

  • Demonstrate empathy while maintaining objective analysis of client circumstances

  • Decision Making, including dealing with job related stress, guided by professional standards of practice
  • Ability to identify risk related to client services and taking appropriate action in consultation with the Supervisor
  • Maintain a current understanding of feminist philosophy

  • Maintain appropriate professional boundaries

  • Works from an ARAO/Intersectionality lens and harm reduction framework

Employment Requirements:

  • Vulnerable Sector Police Clearance Certificate and maintaining clearance requirements during course of employment
  • Valid driver's license and insurance
  • CPR and First Aid Certification

Physical / Mental Effort:

Based on work schedule/flow the frequency of the following tasks will vary according to need:

  • Changing priorities and workflow to accommodate needs of others, and imposed deadlines

  • Providing active listening, empathy, counselling and support to service users via telephone or in person

  • Working with individuals in crisis situations

  • Sitting for long periods of time at a desk or in a counselling room

Working Conditions:

  • Open concept work area
  • Individual counselling / meeting room
  • Potential of doing counselling sessions in a variety of settings (i.e. client's home, public spaces, other agencies, etc.)
  • Ability to accompany clients to and from other services providers, medical and other professional appointments

  • May be required to work off-site at FTP satellite locations

Salary:

  • $52,047 - $61,040 + Benefits
