Legal Assistant – Litigation

Responsibilities:

  • Draft correspondence to clients, legal counsel and the courts
  • Manage the overall operations of files; file openings, maintenance, and closings
  • Review and proofread outgoing documents to ensure they are correct and comply with legal procedures
  • Draft and file documents with applicable courts (electronic filing where applicable) and follow-up as required

  • Draft general pleadings and court documents, prepare affidavits of records, undertaking responses from questioning, chambers motions (Master and Justice regular and Specials), collection and bankruptcy proceeding

  • Manage client-related aspects including client relationship management; file organization and management; appointments and meetings; diarizing files and various administrative tasks as required

  • Handle regular and electronic incoming mail and other material, telephone inquiries and couriers, and co-ordinate the flow of information
  • Handle routine accounting procedures: billing, cheque deposits/requests, time entry, etc.
  • Manage lawyer's calendar and schedule appointments
  • The ability to manage multiple files and adeptly handle day-to-day issues
  • Review and proofread outgoing documents to ensure they are correct and comply with legal procedures
  • Check for conflicts and submit file opening requests
  • Assist paralegals and lawyers from other office with notarizing, filing, searches, disbursements, etc.
  • Access and use online legal resources
  • Handle routine accounting procedures: billing, cheque deposits/requests, time entry, etc.
  • Maintain client contact lists
  • Serve as a Commissioner for Oaths
  • Other related administrative tasks as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Successful completion of a legal assistant program from a recognized educational institution with a minimum of 3 years related experience OR sufficient years of related experience
  • Understand Alberta Rules of Court and Litigation
  • The capability to prepare routine legal documents without the assistance of a lawyer
  • A strong organizer who consistently keeps files moving forward while juggling priorities within a fast paced, high volume, deadline driven environment
  • High drive and initiative, self-motivated with a can-do and positive mindset
  • Professionalism with a calm diplomatic approach
  • Experience with PCLaw, Acumin, Worldox an asset
