Reporting to the CFO, the Director of Finance has the technical expertise and operational mindset to be a strategic and operational partner to the executive team, providing financial leadership and insight to drive operational efficiency, cost control, and sustainable growth. This role oversees all aspects of financial management, including financial reporting, tax, treasury, risk management, cost accounting, and analysis to support decision-making in a fast-paced production context.

The Director of Finance plays a pivotal role in developing the systems and processes necessary to support world-class production and ensure sustained profitability during a period of accelerated growth. Acting as a trusted financial advisor, the Director, Finance will collaborate with cross-functional teams to optimize financial operations and drive continuous improvement through providing value insights and data on which the leaders can make strategic operational decisions. Additionally, the role oversees financial reporting, compliance and strategic financial analysis to support long-term business objectives.

Key Responsibilities

Operational & Financial Strategy

  • Lead the development and execution of financial strategies that align with operational goals and the company's strategic plan.
  • Partner closely with R&D, Operations, Engineering and Supply Chain leaders to identify cost-saving opportunities and process improvements.
  • Provide scenario modelling and risk analysis for operational investments, capital projects, and new product introductions.

Financial Planning & Analysis (FP&A)

  • Play a key role in the development of annual budgets, quarterly forecasts, and long-term plans.
  • Develop robust financial models to analyze manufacturing variances, standard costing, throughput, and capacity utilization.
  • Prepare clear, actionable reports and dashboards for senior management with insights on key performance indicators (KPIs).

Financial Reporting & Compliance

  • Lead the Company's transition from ASPE to IFRS and ensure ongoing compliance with GAAP.
  • Oversee shareholder reporting, external audits and funding requirements.
  • Establish internal controls and risk management strategies to protect company assets

Commercialization & Scalability

  • Designs financial models to support pricing strategies, gross margin optimization and scaling production.
  • Develops cost control frameworks that align with commercial product launches and volume manufacturing.
  • Collaborates with leadership to define KPIs that ensure operational efficiency and cost competitiveness.

Cost Accounting & Inventory Control

  • Implement and maintain effective cost accounting systems and processes to ensure accurate tracking of production costs, labour, and overhead.
  • Lead efforts to analyze and reduce waste, scrap, and inefficiencies across the production floor.
  • Ensure inventory is properly valued and reconciled, working closely with operations and supply chain teams.

Business Partnership & Leadership

  • Serve as a trusted advisor to the cross-functional operational leaders, translating financial data into operational actions.
  • Support cross-functional teams with capital expenditure justifications and ROI analyses for new equipment and technology upgrades.
  • Champion a culture of financial discipline and data-driven decision making.
  • Positively contribute to cross-functional collaboration and culture building within the Finance team and across the company.
  • Foster a positive and professional working environment, modelling values that strengthen trust and business excellence at all levels of the organization.

Treasury and Cash Management

  • Develops strategies related to treasury, including financing, banking arrangements and cash management.

Taxation

  • In conjunction with external advisors, ensures the company is planning and managing its tax position in a manner that minimizes tax liability and risk.
  • Ensures the timely and accurate preparation and filing of all tax returns for the group of companies.

Risk Management

  • Ensures that the company has a disciplined approach to enterprise risk management.
  • Ensures appropriate insurance coverage is in place to protect the assets of the company and protect against the financial ramifications of business interruptions, product defects, theft, injury, or other litigation.
  • Identifies other areas of enterprise risks and creates strategies to minimize exposure.

Experience: This role requires an experienced operational-oriented Director where they have been responsible for optimizing financial operations and supporting strategic decision-making to ensure operational discipline.

Expertise: Demonstrated expertise in the development and implementation of systems, processes, and reporting to drive operational performance through data-driven variance analysis.

Strategic & Analytical: Operationally minded, sees the big picture, can analyze complex financial and operational data, identify trends and develop strategic recommendations that drive business efficiency and growth.

Operationally and commercially Savvy: Wants to understand every aspect of the operation and the drivers and levers that can be used to enhance financial performance.

Leadership: An empowering, collaborative leader. Has demonstrated an ability to inspire and lead a team in the achievement of objectives and goals. Delegates effectively and monitors the team to ensure they have the skills and resources. Champions best practices, creative thinking, effective planning and timely decision-making.

Detailed and Data-Driven: Is by nature analytical and data-driven. Has a passion for using a data-based approach to building robust financial infrastructure to support growth, profitability and efficiency within a high-growth and complex manufacturing environment.

Enhance Financial Discipline: Has a track record of designing and implementing fit- for-purpose financial systems and processes that align with business needs and scale with growth. Has a pragmatic and solution-oriented approach to building infrastructure that enhances accuracy, efficiency, and visibility across the organization. Skilled at streamlining workflows, integrating technology, and establishing controls that support both day-to-day execution and strategic decision-making. Understands how to balance customization at the portfolio level with corporate-level discipline and reporting requirements.

Tactical: Is practical, pragmatic and hands-on. Willing to get into the details and work collaboratively with operations and supply chain. By nature, has a "do what it takes" attitude.

Technology: Has worked with ERP/MRP systems and advanced data analytics tools. Has demonstrated their ability to use the full functionality of the systems to enhance an organization's ability to report on, manage and understand the total cost of production.

Communications: An authentic, articulate and succinct communicator who can communicate the need to drive change and implement new practices. Able to engage people across the organization and foster buy-in to new ideas and concepts.

Character: An open, confident, high-energy and entrepreneurial team player with a sense of urgency. Approaches all tasks with a positive, solution-driven attitude.

Balances optimism with a pragmatic approach.

Education: A CPA with CA training is strongly preferred. An MBA is advantageous.

Salary Range: $140,000 - $200,000 CAD

It is common for ranges to span multiple levels in order to attract top talent across experience levels. It is uncommon to be hired at the top of the range; however, in exceptional cases where a candidate's skills and expertise significantly exceed the role's requirements, we may consider offering a higher salary.
