The Opportunity
The City of Greater Sudbury is seeking an experienced Human Resources Business Partner who thrives in complex, unionized environments and brings sound judgment, credibility, and strategic insight to labour relations work.
Reporting to the Director of Human Resources, this role provides employee and labour relations support to a wide range of departments across the organization. As a trusted advisor to senior leaders, you will lead the resolution of complex matters and contribute to strategies that promote workplace stability, compliance and positive labour-management relationships.
What You'll Do
- Lead the resolution of complex labour and employee relations matters, including grievances, mediations and arbitrations.
- Serve as the primary labour relations advisor to leaders within assigned client groups.
- Provide expert interpretation of collective agreements, labour legislation, and human resources policy.
- Participate in collective bargaining and act as Chief Spokesperson when required.
- Negotiate settlements and memoranda of understanding.
- Conduct and support investigations related to human rights and workplace harassment.
- Develop policy and deliver supervisory training.
- Proactively identify labour risks and recommend strategic, practical solutions.
What You Bring
- University degree and at least five years of labour relations experience or a college diploma and at least seven years of labour relations experience in a large, unionized organization.
- Demonstrated experience in grievance handling, arbitration preparation and collective bargaining.
- Strong knowledge of labour legislation and best practices.
- Ability to influence leaders and balance business needs with employee advocacy.
- Certified Human Resources Professional (CHRP ) designation is an asset.
Language
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English are required.
Other Requirements
- Must be physically capable of operating a vehicle safely, possess a valid Class "G" driver's licence and have an acceptable driving record.
