The Hari B. Varshney Business Career Centre is a personal, professional, and career development centre that serves 4,000+ undergraduate and 1,000+ graduate business students at UBC Sauder School of Business.
The Career Coach is part of the Hari B. Varshney Business Career Centre (BCC) team and provides leadership, opportunities, and services to UBC Sauder students enrolled in the Robert H. Lee Graduate School to be able to connect their skills, talents, interests and education to the changing world of work.
The Career Coach delivers high quality level of service to a diverse and multi-faceted group of graduate students, and is responsible for the entire cycle of students' career journey at UBC Sauder, from admissions/intake to new grad support. The Career Coach leverages and incorporates direct coaching experience and knowledge to student career coaching and advising services in both one-on-one and group settings, both in person and in virtual format.
The Career Coach achieves results in three key areas of responsibility:
Personal and professional development: Develops and delivers, world-class customized career coaching services and programming, tailoring it to the needs of the graduate student population.
Access to business community: Expands students' opportunities to engage with employers, alumni and community.
Service Excellence: In collaboration with colleagues across the BCC, continuously improves the quality of career content and resources.
Organizational Status
The Career Coach reports to the Associate Director, Graduate Careers and regularly plans and collaborates with colleagues from across the BCC as well as the Robert H. Lee Graduate School. The Career Coach may supervise external consultants, support employees and students. The Career Coach takes on leadership roles in cross-functional team projects within the BCC, and Robert H. Lee Graduate School.
Work Performed
Personal and professional development
- Advises and coaches students in their awareness and development of personal and professional competencies, including self-awareness, leadership development, decision making and learning, all related to their career goals.
- Designs, delivers and evaluates career programming and resources by leveraging industry knowledge and expertise, innovative theory and evidence-based practices within the fields of career development.
- Develops and delivers comprehensive world-class career programs and coaching responsive to the needs of the UBC Sauder graduate students.
- Organizes and may facilitate professional development workshops and networking events as part of professional residency weeks and ongoing professional development during students' program duration.
- Provides in-person and online career coaching, with the emphasis on personal and professional development. Identifies and refers students who need health and wellbeing resources to the appropriate support or intervention (i.e., Emergency Services, Counseling Services, Early Alert).
- Collaborates with the Robert H. Lee Graduate School and BCC's business development teams to help graduate students in current and future positions with local, national, and global employers.
- Recommends and provides senior decision-makers with insights to inform career coaching and advising strategies for traditional and non-traditional (non-linear) career paths.
- Conducts market analysis on growth industries and geographic regions, hiring trends and competitive skills requirements to identify new opportunities for student and alumni employment.
- Promotes student engagement in career development activities within UBC Sauder, UBC and beyond.
Access to business community
- In collaboration with the Business Career Centre, Business Development team and UBC Alumni Engagement partners builds and maintains relationships with the business community to facilitate student learning and development, focused on careers.
- Facilitates student connections and introductions to the business community for professional networking.
- Actively develops strong personal relationships with the students, working with them on self-assessment, leadership development, employment opportunities and volunteer activities when they become alumni.
- Advises students of relevant opportunities to engage with the business community through networking events and other activities that support their career goals.
- Contributes to the success and sustainability of student-led initiatives by connecting them to the business community (e.g., clubs and societies).
Service Excellence
- Leads and contributes to programs and activities to develop and implement a range of career and professional development initiatives. Collaborates with multiple stakeholders to set project goals, timelines, scope and processes, manages communication among project participants, identifies obstacles, plans and chairs meetings, tracks timelines, evaluates outcomes, etc.
- Fosters student leadership and career learning through advising, training and professional development planning for student clubs, organizations, volunteers and teams.
- Fosters an inclusive and respectful learning environment where all students have the opportunity to thrive professionally, academically and personally.
- Serves the BCC and its colleagues with expertise in one or several topics of leadership development for our students.
- Responsible for the ongoing assessment, evaluation and improvement planning of career programs for students. Collects and records data and feedback, analyzes, documents and reports results, integrates suggestions and improvements into programs and services primarily related to career coaching.
- Contributes to strategic planning processes and the setting of goals and priorities for the portfolio.
- Influences multiple stakeholders to create and set direction, persuade action, and achieve consensus toward collective aspirations and goals as related to career building experiences.
- Assists in managing the marketing and promotion of programs and events to students, alumni, faculty, academic departments, and the workplace community.
- Develops, manages, and maintains budget for appropriate student resources, support and activities.
- Undertakes other related duties as assigned.
Consequence of Error/Judgement
Works with considerable autonomy and exercises considerable judgment in carrying out assignments and respectfully dealing with a diverse group of important stakeholders. Accountable for the effective execution of all matters related to graduate students' career services and the effectiveness of the services provided. Makes significant independent decisions and recommendations in areas of planning, organizing and scheduling of work. Establishes own operational procedures for graduate Career Services, monitors progress, and recommends program development changes in relation to curriculum needs and stakeholder feedback. Exercises significant level of judgment in dealings with the business community, faculty members and alumni.
Supervision Received
Reports to the Associate Director, Graduate Careers. Works autonomously under broad guidelines and under a high level of accountability.
Supervision Given
Trains and supervises support employees, student assistants, interns, consultants and/or volunteers. Trains new professional employees in the BCC.
Minimum Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of three to four years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Demonstrates a commitment to enhancing one's own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion
Preferred Qualifications
- Coaching certification from a recognized program is required.
- Certification in at least one of the self-assessment tools and programs (e.g., CliftonStrengths, Career Leader, Emotional Capital Report) is required.
- Experience working with management to executive level business people in one or more of the areas of career coaching, recruitment, training and learning development, career services delivery, outplacement, executive search, talent management and transition/recruitment.
- Knowledgeable about career trends in the changing world of work.
- Knowledge of career theory models.
- Working knowledge of 1-2 key industries or functions is an asset.
- Excellent presentation, communication, public speaking, and project management skills.
- Computer skills required. Must have experience with MS Office applications, including advanced Word and PowerPoint skills and intermediate Excel skills.
- Demonstrated competence in planning, implementing, and evaluating programs or events.
- Ability to work both independently and within multiple team environments.
- Ability to accommodate flexible hours (e.g., may attend events, deliver workshops or provide training some evenings and weekends).
- Ability to think strategically and exercise diplomacy, tact, and discretion.
- Demonstrated ability to conduct respectful consultation and collaboration with stakeholders.
- Hands-on knowledge of online content development, delivery and management (blog and/or website management).
- Working knowledge of databases and contact management systems is an asset.
- Facilitation or teaching experience is an asset.
- Experience in designing, developing, delivering, and evaluating career-related content in workshops or group settings is preferred.
- Experience using web-based platforms and instructional technology to teach and engage students in career development.
