Vancouver Debate Academy (VDA) is hiring a full-time Head Coach & Program Lead
to build our
US-style debate program
and
help create an
AI debate judge/coach
that will let us scale world-class coaching online.

This is a rare role for a
recent or early-career graduate
who wants to combine:

  • Competitive
    US debate (PF/LD/WSD/NSDA)
  • Education & youth leadership
  • Startup-style operations, business growth, and AI/tech

We are based in
Vancouver, Canada
and are open to candidates across Canada who can work in Canada without sponsorship (citizen/PR/PGWP/work permit on PR pathway).

What you'll do

Coaching & Program Leadership (roughly 50%)

  • Lead our
    US-format competitive debate program
    (especially Public Forum; LD/WSD a plus).
  • Teach weekly classes and small-group practices (middle and high school students).
  • Prepare students for local and online tournaments: case prep, drills, round review.
  • Support at tournaments (mostly online; some in-person travel).
  • Help design curriculum, drills, and feedback systems that can be scaled online.

Growth, Operations & Product (roughly 30%)

  • Work directly with the founder to
    grow our online debate programs
    in North America and beyond.
  • Help design new offerings (online squads, camps, digital products).
  • Coordinate schedules, parent communication, and simple operations.
  • Track key metrics (enrolment, retention, student outcomes) and suggest experiments.

AI Debate Judge / Coach Project (roughly 20%)

  • Collaborate with our AI/engineering partners to build an
    AI debate judge and, later, an AI debate coach
    .
  • Label and annotate debate rounds, help define rubrics and evaluation criteria.
  • Test prototypes with students and provide structured feedback on UX and pedagogy.
  • Think creatively about how AI can automate routine feedback while
    freeing humans
    to do deeper coaching.

Who we're looking for

We're open to
two types of candidates

Track A – Debate-heavy

  • Strong track record in
    competitive debate
    (PF, LD, WSD, BP, or similar) at the high-school or university level.
  • Some coaching/teaching/tutoring experience with teens (formal or informal).
  • Curious about AI/ed-tech and excited to help design better tools.

Track B – Biz/Tech-heavy

  • Solid experience in
    student leadership, operations, business/club management, or product/tech projects
    (e.g., running a club, startup, hackathon, or program).
  • Comfortable learning the specifics of US debate formats; some prior debating or public speaking is a plus.
  • Enjoys metrics, experiments, and building systems.

For both tracks, non-negotiables:

  • Eligible to work in Canada (citizen, PR, PGWP, or work permit with PR pathway).
  • Comfortable working with middle- and high-school students and their parents.
  • Pro-AI mindset
    : sees AI as a tool and opportunity, not a threat.
  • High energy, grit, and a genuine desire to
    grow into bigger responsibility
    over time.
  • Clear, confident communicator in English (spoken and written).
