Position Overview
Our client, a major national leader in the transportation industry, is seeking a Senior IT Support and Server Technician to join their dynamic IT team. This full-time, onsite role is based in the Toronto area.
You will be the go-to expert for maintaining, troubleshooting, and supporting a critical server environment that includes on-premise and cloud-hosted infrastructure (AWS and Azure). The ideal candidate is a proactive team player who can ensure optimal performance, availability, and security across all systems while jumping in to assist with general IT support.
Key Responsibilities
Server Mastery: Install, configure, and maintain both physical and virtual servers to guarantee optimal performance and uptime.
Cloud & Virtual Management: Utilize extensive experience in server deployment and management within physical, virtual (VMware/Hyper-V), and cloud environments (AWS, Azure).
Proactive Monitoring & Optimization: Continuously monitor server performance, proactively address potential issues, and apply system upgrades, patches, and security updates.
Security & Compliance: Implement server security best practices, including firewalls and encryption, and monitor logs for suspicious activity to safeguard data and systems.
Data Integrity: Implement and manage robust backup strategies (including Veeam) and participate in disaster recovery planning and testing to ensure quick service recovery.
Troubleshooting: Rapidly diagnose and resolve complex server-related hardware, software, and network incidents and service requests.
Collaboration & Documentation: Work seamlessly with network engineers, developers, and other IT staff. Maintain accurate, detailed records of server configurations and troubleshooting steps.
Experience & Technical Requirements
Minimum 10 years of experience in an IT Support and Server Management role.
Minimum 10 years of troubleshooting experience with hardware and software support.
Post-secondary education in IT or Computer Science, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Hands-on experience with Windows and Linux server environments in both on-premise and hosted setups.
Strong technical foundation in:
Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, and other networking protocols.
Server virtualization platforms (e.g., VMware, Hyper-V).
Cloud platforms (AWS, Azure), including an understanding of subscription costs and management.
Familiarity with server monitoring tools and performance optimization techniques.
Proven Project Management skills for major tasks, such as office moves and infrastructure upgrades.
Ability to handle new products and applications with a self-driven approach to learning.
The Details
Job Type: Full-time, Permanent.
Working Conditions: Regular office hours with occasional on-call support (evenings/weekends) for system maintenance or emergencies.
Location: On-site in the Toronto area.
Travel: Occasional travel within Canada is required to assist with major projects.
Physical Demands: Must be able to lift and move server hardware and other IT equipment and be comfortable working in an industrial environment.
