The Compensation Range is the span between the minimum and maximum base salary for a position. In the normal course, employees will be hired, transferred or promoted between the minimum and midpoint of the salary range for a job.

Job Description Summary
Accessibility Advisors develop and implement organizational change initiatives, policies, processes and programs that promote accessible and inclusive learning, living and working environments at UBC; and, determine and facilitate disability related accommodations for students, faculty and staff supported by the Centre for Accessibility.

Organizational Status
The Centre for Accessibility provides leadership on issues of accessibility for people with disabilities on the UBC Vancouver campus and facilitates disability related accommodations for members of the UBC Vancouver campus. Accessibility Advisors report to the Director of the Centre for Accessibility and work collaboratively as a member of a team of professionals, actively participating in and contributing to the development and implementation of educational programs and organizational change initiatives. Accessibility Advisors work in collaboration with UBC faculty and staff, UBC Okanagan, student organizations, and community groups to achieve shared goals.

Work Performed

  • Develops and implements organizational change initiatives, policies, processes and educational programs that promote accessible and inclusive learning, living and working environments at UBC.

  • Determines and facilitates reasonable accommodation for students living with disabilities based on documentation of disability provided as articulated in UBC Policy LR7, Accommodation for Students with Disabilities.

  • Manages complex cases involving accommodation for students living with disabilities.

  • Provides consultation services to faculty and staff regarding the impact of policy, process and programming on access to post-secondary education for individuals living with disabilities.

  • Determines and facilitates reasonable accommodations for UBC faculty, staff and visitors in collaboration with appropriate University units.

  • Advises the members of the University community on the provision of accommodations for people with disabilities.

  • Develops and participates in program evaluation and research projects that focus on student educational needs, equity issues and learning environment.

  • Conducts on-going evaluations of relevant policies, programs and services and recommend improvements.

  • Liaises with individuals, community organizations, professional organizations, post-secondary educational institutions, government and other partners to enhance post-secondary access for a diverse population of students.

  • Promotes awareness and education on matters relating to post-secondary access for diverse populations of students and develops, supports, encourages, and promotes provincial, national and international programs and post-secondary access in conjunction with other post-secondary educational institutions, off-campus agencies and government departments.

  • Prepares reports, publications and other written work as required.

  • Performs duties consistent with the position and the role of The Centre for Accessibility as requested.

Working Condition

  • The incumbent will be provided with standard encrypted office equipment including a laptop and computer accessories if required. Working from home as well as in the office on a set schedule will be required.  Some evening and weekend work may be required, as well as some travel.

Consequence of Error/Judgement
Failure to meet the expectations of the job may create severe hardship for prospective and current students, faculty, staff and visitors to UBC and/or severe public relations or legal difficulties for The Centre for Accessibility and the University.

Supervision Received
Supervision will be provided by the Director for the Centre for Accessibility. Incumbent acts independently within established ethical guidelines.

Supervision Given
May supervise project staff, student employees and volunteers.

Minimum Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of five to six years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

- Willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one's own
- Demonstrates a commitment to enhancing one's own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion

Preferred Qualifications

  • Relevant University or College experience required.

  • Graduate degree in a relevant discipline preferred.

  • Considerable training and experience in issues related to disability, universal design and duty to accommodate in a post-secondary setting.

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse communities of students.

  • Proven ability to design and implement organizational change initiatives.

  • Demonstrated ability to plan ahead, direct the work of others, and ensure deadlines are met.

  • Proven ability to take direction, lead others and to function as an effective team member.

  • Ability to envision and implement innovative programs and initiatives.

  • Past experience in evaluating program delivery and impact.

  • Demonstrated attention to detail and ability to manage multiple tasks and projects.

  • Demonstrated outstanding oral and written communication skills and the ability to build rapport with staff, students, faculty and community partners. Ability to communicate well in a cross-cultural environment.

  • Proven public speaking, interpersonal and problem-solving skills.
