Since 1878, Western University has been committed to serving our communities through the pursuit of academic excellence and by providing students, faculty, and community members with life-long opportunities for intellectual, social, and cultural growth. We seek excellent students, faculty, and staff to join us in what has become known as the "Western Experience" - an opportunity to contribute to a better world through the development of new knowledge, new abilities, new connections, and new ways to make a difference.
About UsThe calendar description of courses offered in our Doctor of Education program, Graduate Education is available at:
More information on our Faculty is available at:
For more information about this position, please contact Evangeline Castillo at
Course InformationThis non-credit course provides upper year EdD students with an opportunity to pursue an area of interest in depth, which is not available in a regular course. Students and instructors explore topics with the purpose of facilitating further development toward completion of program milestones (e.g., the Dissertation in Practice). This course is not intended to provide an alternative to established courses during a term when not scheduled.
ResponsibilitiesYou will be responsible for all activities associated with the successful delivery of the course, including but not limited to: developing, preparing, and delivering the course; setting and marking examinations, assessing the academic work of students, and reporting grades.
Candidates must be willing to undertake training as required by the Employer including, but not limited to, training in respect of health and safety, harassment and discrimination, and legislated service standards.
QualificationsCandidates must have an EdD or PhD, with a doctoral degree in the relevant field. For this course, the degree field is Equity and Social Justice Education. Knowledge of critical perspectives of equity, diversity, and inclusion, as well as an understanding of intersectional approaches to anti-oppressive education and their relevance for professional learning and practice in education and/or community contexts are also required. A capacity for excellence in instruction for online adult learners are also required.
Successful online graduate teaching experience is required, with online doctoral teaching preferred. Robust knowledge of writing conventions is expected. A strengths-based disposition towards students with different learning experiences is an asset. Equity-deserving candidates, particularly Indigenous scholars, are encouraged to apply. Preference will be given to applicants with relevant publications in the field of Equity, Diversity, and Social Justice Studies and/or who have a particular methodological expertise in equity and social justice research studies, with proven experience of supervising/teaching students in this capacity.
In this role, successful candidates are expected to:
- Collaborate with Program Manager, Academic Coordinator, and faculty colleagues for course development, synchronous learning opportunities, and sharing resources
- Support graduate student learning, particularly academic writing, as well as the ability to identify learning challenges and teach students from diverse backgrounds.
In addition to the application materials, candidates should attach a letter of application addressed to the Appointments Committee specifying qualifications for the position, a statement of equity and social justice experience, and plans for advancing equity, diversity, and inclusion in professional settings.
Affirmation PolicyWestern, like many postsecondary institutions in Canada, is moving beyond sole reliance upon Indigenous self-identification in its hiring processes. This is to safeguard against the use of incorrect, incomplete, or misleading information in circumstances in which a candidate has made a declaration of Indigenous citizenship or membership. Candidates who are invited for an interview or who are short-listed, and who have made a declaration of Indigenous citizenship or membership for material advantage at Western, including where required or preferred for the position, will be asked to have their declaration of Indigenous citizenship or membership affirmed through a relational accountability process, led by the Office of Indigenous Initiatives (OII), that is consistent with Indigenous ways of knowing, being, and doing. Please contact the OII directly for details on the affirmation processes: The policy can be viewed at: POLICY Affirming Declarations of Indigenous Citizenship or Membership at Western University.
Applying at WesternIn submitting your application, candidates should attach a curriculum vitae and evidence of successful teaching, together with the names and contact information of qualified individuals who could be contacted about their teaching experience and ability.
In accordance with the Faculty Collective Agreement, consideration of applicants will include an assessment of previous performance, experience, and qualifications, including qualifications which go beyond the requirements for the position. Applicants should have fluent written and oral communication skills in English.
Course offerings could be assigned to the workload of full-time faculty or to part-time faculty with seniority or preference rights in accordance with the Faculty Collective Agreement, or left unfilled based on operational/enrolment requirements. All positions are subject to budget approval.
Western Values DiversityThe University invites applications from all qualified individuals. Western is committed to employment equity and diversity in the workplace and welcomes applications from women, members of racialized groups/visible minorities, Indigenous persons, persons with disabilities, persons of any sexual orientation, and persons of any gender identity or gender expression.
