Hours of Work: 14 hrs/wk – flexible, no set days

Nature of position: Permanent, Part-Time

Contribution:

The Occupational Therapist provides direct therapy services to children. Assesses, plans and carries out individually designed programs of physical treatment appropriate to the child's health requirements and daily living environment which are designed to help the child live, play and work with optimum physical functioning. The Occupational Therapist uses and promotes a family centred approach and mentors parents/caregivers in helpful strategies for the child. The Occupational Therapist is a dedicated and knowledgeable member of the comprehensive children's support team.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor degree in Occupational Therapy or combined Physical/Occupational Therapy.
  • Registration with the College of Occupational Therapy of BC and eligible for membership with the Canadian Occupational Therapy Association.
  • Pediatric experience (minimum one year preferred).
  • Valid driver's license.

  • Ability to work independently and as a member of the Child Development Team.

Responsibilities:

A. Clinical

  • Conducts assessments of children, develops individualized treatment plans and strategies based on the child's requirements and the daily living environment.
  • Provides ongoing support and evaluation. Initiates or supports referrals for additional services from other professionals.
  • Organizes and participates in team meetings/case reviews and individual planning sessions for children.
  • Maintains open and positive communication with parents, requests input and participation of parents in the development of the child's programs.
  • Makes home visits. Assists parents in advocating for the best interest of the child and their family.
  • Recommends and/or provides splints, adapted equipment, self-care, play and learning materials to the child/family, as appropriate.

B. Community

  • Participates as required in the transition process for children transferring to other community programs.
  • Liaises and works collaboratively with other professionals.
  • Promotes a family centred approach to case management. Promotes a well-coordinated team approach to agency and inter-agency service delivery in the best interests of the family and the community.
  • Provides information and education, individually or in group settings, to parents, co-workers and the community.

C. Administrative

  • Maintains records, documentation and reporting as outlined in the Program Operating Manual.
  • Assists with maintenance and revision of the Program Operating Manual.
  • Other related duties as required.

  5. Driver's Abstract.

Vacation & Leave: Employees accumulate 6% vacation pay on all hours worked in the first and second year of employment. After the first two years of employment, they earn one additional day of vacation per year of service, to a maximum of 35 workdays.
