About the role

Shift Supervisor – Durham York

Summary:

The Shift Supervisor coordinates and oversees the shift activities of the Operations Department at the Durham York Energy Facility (registered 1st Class Power Plant). Reporting to the Assistant Chief Engineer, this role involves supervising and coordinating operations maintenance activities either personally or through subordinates. This role is critical to maintaining plant reliability, safety, and environmental compliance. It offers a strong career pathway into roles such as Operations Manager, Facilities Manager, Maintenance Manager, or Mechanical Supervisor.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Lead, coach, and support the Control Room Operators, Auxiliary Operators, Crane Operators, and Utility Operators to safely and efficiently operate a registered 1st Class Power Plant (waste to energy power plant).
  • Set clear expectations, communicate priorities, and make sure every team member understands their role in meeting production and environmental goals.
  • Promote open communication — hold daily job discussions, encourage input from operators, and ensure feedback is given in a positive and constructive way.
  • Conduct regular field job observations to verify safe work practices, compliance with procedures, and opportunities for coaching or improvement.
  • Ensure all work is completed safely, accurately documented, and in compliance with environmental and company standards.
  • Handle scheduling, performance discussion, training, and discipline in a fair and consistent manner that builds trust and accountability.
  • Support employee development through mentorship, training, and recognition of strong performance.
  • Demonstrates the ability to manage and lead effectively within a unionized environment, fostering collaboration and mutual respect.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Safety Leadership: Set the tone for safety every day. Lead by example, hold pre-job briefings, verify permits, and ensure the team follows Life Critical Rule requirements. Stop any unsafe act immediately and use it as a learning opportunity.
  • Environmental Responsibility: Ensure compliance with all environmental policies, CEMS monitoring, and permit limits. Promote awareness of how operations affect emissions, ash handling, and waste streams. Report and help resolve environmental incidents quickly and accurately.
  • Technical Oversight: Maintain a strong understanding of plant systems — boilers, turbines, air pollution control, feedwater systems, and balance of plant. Support operators in troubleshooting, diagnosing, and responding to process upsets or alarms.
  • Documentation and Reporting: Ensure all shift logs, reports, rounds sheets, and operational records are accurate, complete, and submitted on time. Review data for trends that may indicate process inefficiencies or potential equipment issues.
  • Communication and Coordination: Work closely with Maintenance, Environmental, and Engineering teams to plan and execute work safely and efficiently. Ensure smooth shift handovers with clear, detailed communication.
  • Job Discussions and Observations: Lead daily pre-job briefs and toolbox talks focused on safety, environmental impacts, and technical understanding. Conduct regular field checks to observe work in progress, give feedback, and reinforce good practices.
  • Continuous Improvement: Identify and recommend plant improvements or procedural updates that enhance reliability, efficiency, and safety.
  • Outage and Project Support: Assist with planning and coordination of outages, ensuring operators understand roles and safety expectations during maintenance work.

Requirements:

  • Broad background in plant operations, with at least five (5) years of hands-on or supervisory experience in power plant machinery.

  • 2nd or 1st Class Inter-Provincial Power Engineers Certification is required; a general supervisory background in an electrical generating facility is preferred.

  • General knowledge and/or experience in industrial safety or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Experience in a Solid Fuel facility is highly desirable.

  • Coaches and supports operators to improve performance and technical understanding.
  • Comfortable using basic computer programs such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint for logs, reports, and training materials.

Physical and Work Requirements

  • Works shift rotation in a 24/7 operation (12-hour days or nights).
  • Provides shift coverage as required, including supporting coverage planning and ensuring the facility remains staffed in accordance with TSSA and company requirements.
  • Regularly stands, walks, climbs, bends, kneels, and uses hands for tools and equipment.
  • Occasionally lifts and moves items up to 50 pounds.
  • Routinely performs plant walkdowns, inspections, and safety checks in all areas of the facility.
  • Must be able to see clearly at various distances and work safely in tight spaces when required (e.g., during outages, inspections, and maintenance).
  • Participates in confined space entries for boiler, drum, or air pollution control inspections, following all safety procedures and permits.

Communication and Documentation

  • Applies basic mathematical, chemistry and physics for troubleshooting and equipment adjustments.
  • Understands the technical relationship between steam, fuel, air, and emissions.
