YMCA Camping and Outdoor Education offers outdoor experiences that foster personal growth and build community. After taking part in our programs, children and youth return home more confident, independent, and with new friendships. YMCA Camp Pine Crest is an overnight camp serving children, families, and organizations through naturally focused programs that embody the mission, vision, and outcomes of the YMCA. Camp Pine Crest is made up of 650 acres of Muskoka wilderness surrounded by 3 interconnected lakes with 8km of shoreline; has over 26km of hiking trails and 7,500 sq. ft. of dock and has 60 buildings.
The Assistant Food Services Director works closely with the Food Services Director to support the smooth operation of Camp Pine Crest's dining services while fostering a collaborative and high-performing team environment. The role emphasizes delivering high-quality food experiences and promoting a positive, inclusive atmosphere for staff and participants. Strong organizational skills and attention to operational standards ensure efficiency and consistency across all services. The position requires the ability to stand for extended periods, work long days, and participate in the communal living environment of the centre.
In this role, you will:
- Collaborate with the Food Services Director and kitchen team to prepare and serve camp meals efficiently while maintaining quality and a positive environment
- Assist with summer staff training alongside the Food Services Director to support the development and growth of team members
- Supervise the food services team by providing coaching, guidance, and support to coordinators and all kitchen staff
- Assist with managing food orders, inventory, and operations within the assigned budget
- Maintain high standards of food safety, ensuring all team members follow proper procedures, camp policies, and regulations
- Complete administrative tasks accurately and on time, including kitchen and purchasing paperwork, performance appraisal documentation, and incident reports
- Maintain a clean and organized kitchen, including washing dishes and sanitizing equipment as needed
- Build and sustain positive relationships with campers, staff, volunteers, and families to foster a welcoming environment
- Provide appropriate food substitutions for guests with dietary restrictions or cultural needs, ensuring awareness of allergies and safe alternatives
- Attend all staff trainings and meetings, arriving on time and actively contributing to team development
- Follow and enforce Health & Safety procedures, sharing responsibility with the team to keep facilities clean, organized, and safe for all participants
- Act as a positive role model by demonstrating the values of the YMCA, Pine Crest's guiding principles, YMCA policies and procedures, and Ontario Camps Association standards
- Perform other duties as assigned
You bring:
- Standard First Aid & "CPR-C" required by the first day of employment and valid until at least the last day of your contract
- Food Handler Certificate required by the first day of employment and valid until at least the last day of your contract or equivalent experience
- Minimum 2 years supervising staff, preferably in a kitchen setting
- Minimum 2 years of experience in an institutional kitchen
- Ability to lead and empower a staff team of young leaders
- Ability to provide mentorship and guidance to both inexperienced and seasoned staff
- Ability to deliver feedback in a timely, professional, and constructive manner
- Demonstrated ability to multi-task and be adaptable to change
- Demonstrated organizational skills
- Demonstrated ability to effectively work in a team environment and independently to achieve optimal collective results
- Well-developed interpersonal and relationship-building skills; ability to establish rapport and communicate effectively with members, staff, and volunteers
- Excellent communication skills
- Ability to work flexible hours, including days, evenings, overnights, weekends, and holidays required
