What you'll do:
The Health & Safety Advisor will play a key role in supporting Discovery Co-op's ongoing commitment to a safe and healthy work environment across all business divisions. This position provides expert advice, leadership, and hands-on support to managers, supervisors, and team members in building a proactive safety culture. This includes ensuring compliance with all applicable legislation, developing and maintaining safety programs and procedures, and fostering continuous improvement in our Health & Safety practices.
Key Responsibilities:
- Support Senior Leaders and Team Leaders in developing and maintaining Discovery Co-op's Safety Management System, policies, and procedures.
- Conduct hazard identification, risk assessments, incident investigations, and follow-up on corrective actions.
- Support our Occupational Health Committees across multiple locations to ensure compliance with legislative requirements.
- Lead site inspections and audits; identify potential risks and recommend corrective measures.
- Deliver and facilitate Health & Safety training, including new hire orientation, Workplace Violence Prevention, and First Aid coordination.
- Maintain and update emergency response procedures, evacuation plans, and PPE standards.
- Prepare and distribute monthly and quarterly safety reports, analyzing trends and recommending improvements.
- Monitor compliance with health and safety legislation and act as a liaison with external regulatory bodies.
- Stay current on emerging legislation, technologies, and best practices to strengthen Discovery Co-op's safety programs.
- Travel regularly to various Co-op locations to provide on-site safety support and leadership.

Who you are:
You are an organized, proactive, and safety-minded professional who thrives in a collaborative, service-oriented environment and posses the following requirements:
- Occupational Health & Safety Certificate or Diploma from an accredited post-secondary institution.
- Minimum of 3+ years of relevant experience in occupational health and safety, preferably in a multi-site or retail environment. A combination of education and experience may be considered.
- Solid working knowledge of health and safety legislation and compliance requirements.
- Valid Class 5 driver's license with a reliable personal vehicle and satisfactory Driver's Abstract.
- Strong communication, coaching, and relationship-building skills.
- Proven ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities.
- Must be available for after-hours emergency support as required.
The following certifications/designations are considered assets:
Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP)
- Certified Health & Safety Consultant (CHSC)
- National Construction Safety Officer (NCSO)
- Current First Aid/CPR/AED - Level C, WHMIS, TDG, Forklift Operator, Power Mobile Equipment, and OHC Levels 1 & 2 (or a willingness to obtain).
