What You'll Be Doing

In this role, the Climate Risk Coordinator will be responsible for completing a comprehensive climate risk assessment for the Town of Shelburne, the Municipality of the District of Shelburne, and the Municipality of the District of Barrington. 

As Climate Risk Coordinator you will be directly responsible for working with these communities through conducting engagement activities with community members, leading the defining and mapping of climate hazards and vulnerabilities, developing and writing related risk reports, and coordinating and supporting the development of a regional climate adaption plan based on findings and reports. You will work closely with internal teams to maintain key external relationships with funders and stakeholders.

As this role will be a hybrid/remote work arrangement, the successful candidate must have strong project management skills and the ability to work independently and initiate frequent reviews and progress updates with their supervisor. This position requires occasional travel to community.

This role is open to candidates across Nova Scotia, but preference is given to those who have experience servicing South Shore communities or reside there.

Job Requirements

  • Graduate of a university or community college diploma program in a related field, such as environmental      science, environmental technology, climate science, environmental management, sustainability, geography, urban planning, public policy, or a closely related field.
  • 2-4 years of practical experience related to climate risk and adaptation, sustainability, environmental science, engineering, or a related field, or an acceptable combination of education and work experience.
  • Demonstrable understanding and application of the principles of sustainability, climate risk, climate change adaptation, mitigation, and community resilience.
  • Knowledge of climate science, including climate risk modelling and scenario planning and understanding of local and regional climate hazards (e.g., coastal flooding, storm events, wildfires).
  • Experience hosting and coordinating community engagement and consultation.
  • Knowledge of municipal planning processes, asset management, and emergency preparedness frameworks.
  • Familiarity with tools such as GIS, climate vulnerability indices, and risk assessment software.
  • Ability to synthesize complex climate data into accessible reports and recommendations and present technical information.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills to meet deadlines across multiple deliverables.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively across departments and organizations.
  • Skilled verbal and written communicator, with experience in report writing, grant writing, and confidence in public speaking.
  • Valid Nova Scotia (or other Canadian) driver's license.
  • Successful completion of a criminal record check and driver's abstract upon hire.

Job Responsibilities

  • Lead and oversee the development of a new, comprehensive climate risk assessment for the Town of Shelburne, Municipality of the District of Shelburne and Municipality of the District of Barrington, identifying current and future climate hazards and vulnerabilities faced by the region such as inland flooding and erosion, extreme weather events, and infrastructure vulnerabilities.
  • Work closely with internal teams and external stakeholders and maintain strong relationships.
  • Lead and participate in engagement with key community and equity deserving groups to identify and map key hazards and vulnerabilities in each community. Engagement activities will include facilitating risk matrix exercises and community resilience mapping alongside community members.
  • Assistance with engagement activities related to climate initiatives across the cohort may also be required.
  • Complete a report summarizing community engagement and a climate risk report documenting findings and recommendations.
  • Drawing from the results of the climate risk assessment, assist with the development of a joint adaptation plan for all participating communities, providing clear, actionable recommendations for addressing climate risks and improving resilience. The plans will integrate with existing municipal frameworks, such as asset management or emergency preparedness, ensuring cohesive implementation.
  • Track and report on project performance, supporting the Manager, Community Resilience Projects in ensuring financial accountability and alignment with project objectives.
  • Provide timely updates and information about community projects to the Manager, Community Resilience Projects.
  • Represent Clean at various stakeholder and partner engagements.
  • Additional duties may be assigned to this role further to those noted above.

Job Benefits

$65,000 – $72,500

A successful candidate's starting salary will be determined based on various factors such as skills, experience, training and credentials, as well as other business purposes or needs.
