ABOUT VAINQUEUR

Vainqueur is a data‑led cultural barometer for Canadian fashion, beauty and lifestyle. We pair reporting with original research, translating complex ideas into clear, story‑driven visuals for audiences across platforms.

THE ROLE

This role is open exclusively to students in post-secondary programs who are fulfilling academic internship or practicum hours. As a Fashion Culture Writer, you'll help chart Canada's evolving fashion landscape—profiling designers, decoding consumer shifts, and capturing the nuances of cultural identity through style. Working closely with the Editor-in-Chief and contributing editors, you'll produce reporting that connects Canadian fashion to larger global conversations. The role demands a journalist's curiosity, a cultural critic's perspective, and a storyteller's clarity.

FREELANCE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Report on designer collections, brand strategies, industry events, and cultural trends across Canada.
  • Conduct in-depth research on fashion and beauty brands, translating data and market insights into clear, accessible reporting.
  • Pitch and draft original stories that link fashion to identity, commerce, and culture.
  • Conduct interviews with designers, industry professionals, and cultural figures.
  • Support in coverage of runway shows, presentations, and brand activations.
  • Follow Canadian Press style and Vainqueur's editorial voice.
  • File clean, accurate drafts with sources and supporting materials.

SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS

  • Strong writing and research ability; knowledge of CP style.
  • Students in journalism, photography, fashion design, business or related programs.
  • Broad knowledge of local, national, and international events, viewed through a Canadian fashion lens on beauty, art, lifestyle, and entertainment.
  • Interest in Canadian fashion, culture, and identity.
  • Comfortable working in Google Docs, Slack, and shared drives.
  • Photography, multimedia, or social media skills are an asset.

As we seek funding, grants, and investments, we are committed to keeping our community informed about finances for paid opportunities. After your internship, you may join our contributor network for upcoming freelance roles.

  • Transportation covered: Reasonable local transport for assigned shoots, interviews and events (e.g., transit, ride-share, mileage) is reimbursed with receipts.
  • Software & resources provided: Canva Pro, Otter, Asana, and more
  • Equipment support: Access to VQ equipment where applicable and/or rental reimbursement for approved assignments.
  • Portfolio building: Credited bylines and visual credits on site and social; opportunity to develop case studies and process write‑ups for your portfolio.
  • Professional development: Regular editorial/design reviews, mentorship from the editor, press access when appropriate and opportunities to pitch visual series.
  • Flexible/remote‑first: Work from anywhere in Canada; occasional on‑site coverage as assigned.
  • Compensation: Freelance; per‑piece if funds are available (ex. paid article). Invoicing paid on Net‑30 unless otherwise agreed.
