Position Summary:
The Campus Libraries invites applications for an opening for a Full-Time Library Technician 2, Public Services position. Although the incumbent will work primarily at the Social Science, Humanities and Education Library in Charles Hall, they may also be assigned to other branches within the Ontario Tech library system. The incumbent in this position will provide outstanding customer service and be responsible for a variety of daily library operations including circulation, reference, course reserves, user engagement, equipment troubleshooting, statistical reporting and processing; project assistance; and maintaining library collections, facilities and equipment.
Shifts may be assigned during any regular library opening hours including evenings and weekends. This position currently includes an evening shift once a week and Saturdays once a month.
Responsibilities/accountabilities:
- Customer Service: Delivers excellent service through consistent application of library procedures, with a positive customer service attitude. Greets, assists, follows up, directs, informs, listens, maintains positive relationships, responds to inquiries via email, phone, virtual chat and in person. Acts as a first point of contact in the library and maintains the appearance and function of library facilities and equipment. Monitors library email inboxes, responds to user inquiries and makes referrals as appropriate.
- Circulation and Course Reserves: Charges, discharges and renews library material; issues and updates library cards. Provides general assistance including providing information concerning library procedures and policies; assists patrons with completing request forms, maintains daily statistics, monitors the return of regular circulating material and enforces sanctions, maintains reserve collection.
- Library Operations: Maintains library facilities, equipment and materials. Executes routine opening and closing procedures and emergency closing procedures as required.
- Reference Service: Assists students, faculty, staff and community borrowers with frontline reference queries; demonstrates the use of the Library's print and electronic resources and associated equipment. Makes referrals to other library staff or external departments as necessary.
- Problem Solving and Referrals: Serves as the primary internal escalation point for patron-facing operational issues. Provides technical assistance to Library Technician I staff, student workers, and placement students when they encounter complex patron inquiries or challenging situations. Refers matters requiring professional judgment or specialized research instruction to the Librarian.
- Statistics and Reporting: Uses existing reports to compile library statistics, monitors assigned reports, and assists with file maintenance.
- Special Projects: Performs and coordinates detailed steps, more advanced tasks associated with special projects (collection maintenance, general library organization, signage, displays, webpages, tours, student fairs or other library or campus events).
- Training and Documentation: Prepares and updates written procedures manuals to ensure consistent service standards. Assists with hiring, onboarding, and training of library technicians, student workers and placement students. Coordinates work assignments and provides ongoing mentorship to develop their skills and confidence in library operations.
Required Skills:
- Demonstrated strong customer service attitude and skills
- Knowledge of library circulation policies and procedures is an asset
- Ability to interpret and apply library policies consistently
- Experience providing front line reference service and the effective use of information resources to answer basic and complex reference questions, making appropriate referrals
- Excellent organizational, written and oral communication skills
- Able to handle different tasks and responsibilities, flexibility to adjust to shifting timelines and priorities
- Ability to communicate and collaborate with diverse stakeholders including staff, faculty, students and community members
- Creative problem-solving abilities, demonstrated success working in teams to complete projects, and good judgment for enforcing library policies and procedures
- Ability to safely lift library material, push loaded book carts, shelve library material
- Demonstrated experience in patron engagement including planning and installing displays, participation in outreach through campus events
- Able to work effectively and efficiently with minimal supervision; self-starter with strong time-management skills
- Able to adapt quickly to changing responsibilities and duties, ability to meet deadlines
- Experience with statistical reporting or data compilation
- Demonstrated ability to use a variety of office-based computer applications, e-mail and the Internet
Required Education:
- Completion of a Library and Information Technician diploma or equivalent
- Minimum 1-year experience in a Library providing public services
- Verification of Academic credentials may be required
Required Experience:
- Academic library experience preferred
- Experience with Alma/Primo integrated library system preferred
