Chief Kinosew Awasak Mikwahp (Driftpile Children's Lodge) is a community-based and family-oriented organization dedicated to providing care, protection, and well-being for all Driftpile Cree Nation children in a preventative manner, promoting healing for children, families, and the community. A coordinated, holistic, and interdisciplinary approach forms the foundation of the Agency, ensuring that the developmental needs of children, youth, and families are met with respect for their cultural identity, customs, traditions, beliefs, and values.

JOB OVERVIEW

The Family Preservation Supervisor (FPS) works to tailor supports or identify supports within Edmonton and Southern Alberta for child/youth, family to prevent or reduce risk to child/youth and promote permanency and better outcomes for child/youth and families. The incumbent also establishes or enhances existing relationships and partnerships with community resources and/or CKAM staff in Driftpile in order to provide services to children and their families. The FPS will assist with the oversight of Family Preservation Workers, which includes assisting with case planning, performance management, and creating a positive team atmosphere.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Needs Assessment

  • Undertake assessment of child/youth at risk, and families to identify the issues contributing to the current situation and related factors (e.g., Parental Capacity, Child Development, and Environmental Factors) as part of the Assessment Record.
  • Analyze multiple contributing factors increasing the risk of child or youth, and make recommendations around appropriate strategies and support that will keep the child and family together (e.g., social, health, environmental, client's motivation, capacity and opportunity to make changes to resolve the intervention concern(s).
  • Ensure frontline workers creatively engage and works with the family members to assist the family to understand their situation and develop a path forward together as part of a Case Plan.
  • Enable or support conflict resolution between family members, families and service teams where appropriate, makes referrals to formal or informal alternative dispute resolution supports and/or facilitates family group conferencing for resolution of issues in support of the child/youth at risk.
  • Attend case conferences as needed.

Case Plan Management

  • Advocate for child/family in community and links to services, and collaborate with Driftpile's Preservation team to further advocate for linkages.
  • Collaborate with CKAM team in Driftpile and Edmonton to create cohesive wrap-around services between the two locations.
  • Continually assess the level of risk, make key decisions and responds in a timely manner. Collaborate with Intensive Services or with Preservation team as needed.
  • Oversee services provided, obtain progress updates from frontline workers, and approve the termination of services.

Community Preservation

  • Maintain sound working relationships with services and support providers.
  • Identify opportunities for new or revised supports to address preservation at both a community level and a family level.
  • Collaborates with community members and organizations to support community capacity (improve access) to provide services to child/youth at risk and family.
  • Participates in networking and developing communities of practice.
  • Develops and or delivers public education.

CKAM Program Administration

  • Complete timely/accurate documentation (forms, records and file requirements according to file standards) and keeps all records and files up to date.
  • Participate in CKAM Program planning and reporting, including data collection, summary and analysis as needed.
  • Collaborate and provide back-up as needed for other team members.

Program Team Supervision

  • Promote professional development of all staff; establish unit and individual objectives.
  • Monitor and evaluate performance on a regular basis to ensure adherence to professional standards and Programs policies and procedures.
  • Provide case consultation with staff members and participate in case conferences on complex or contentious cases to support staff.
  • Participate in cases before the Tribunal and abide by its decisions, and translate outcomes into ongoing practice.
  • Develop and maintain systems to assist in building unit morale, provide support to staff and develop staff communication networks to enhance service delivery.

QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Social Work Degree with a minimum of 5 years' experience;
  • Experience overseeing frontline workers.
  • Knowledge of issues and practices of CKAM and the impact on children and families; services to children, family dynamics and an understanding of the sensitive situation's families experience;
  • Experience in the development and participation of case planning with children and families;
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office software including Excel (spreadsheets and pivot tables), PowerPoint, database application and e-mail, team meetings, and video conferencing;
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with accuracy and attention to detail;
  • Ability to multi task and meet deadlines and work without direct supervision;
  • Valid Class 5 Driver's License and clean drivers abstract;
  • Fluency in Cree is an asset; and
  • Criminal, Vulnerable and Child Welfare Intervention record checks will be required at time of interview.
