What You Will Do
You will be responsible for assisting in designing, implementing, and maintaining our core routing and switching infrastructure, and assisting in the development and rollout of new network-related technologies. You will also help improve the network's efficiency through process and network automation, driving us towards our goal of becoming Canada's most efficient and automated telecom. Additionally, you will communicate with contractors as needed for the completion of network-related projects. The position is customer-facing, and from time to time, you will be asked to interact with customers on solution designs and troubleshooting.
Key Responsibilities
Assist in the design, configuration, and maintenance of the company's Juniper, Cisco and Aruba network infrastructure.
Diagnose and resolve network issues, including complex routing problems and performance bottlenecks.
Maintain the AS-SET and RIR along with the peering sessions following the network's best current operational practices (BCOP).
Monitor network performance, security, and availability using network monitoring tools, and respond to alerts and incidents on time.
Create and update network documentation, including network diagrams, configuration files, and inventory records.
Assist in capacity planning by analyzing network traffic patterns and making recommendations for network upgrades and optimizations.
Collaborate with network equipment vendors and partners for equipment procurement, maintenance, and issue resolution.
Participate in network change management processes, ensuring changes are well-planned, tested, and executed without disruptions.
Contribute to network disaster recovery planning and testing to ensure network resiliency and business continuity.
Provide training and knowledge transfer to junior network engineers and support teams.
Collaborates with the Engineering team and others to design and build functional networks based on the company's requirements. Assist senior engineers in designing core network expansions based on business and customer demands.
Is available (on-call 24x7) for core outages / break-fix situations.
Maintains effective professional relationships with partners, customers and team members.
Maintains required reports and metrics; tracks problems.
Provides pre and post-maintenance support, including troubleshooting, updating and training.
Maintains knowledge of current technologies in addition to researching new technologies to keep up with the industry standards and to provide innovative solutions.
This position will participate in an on-call rotation schedule outside of regular working hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays, to respond to urgent matters as necessary. The Employer will determine the specific schedule for on-call duties and may be subject to change based on operational needs.
Qualifications
A Bachelor's degree in a related field, such as Computer Science, Information Technology, or Network Engineering, is typically required.
Industry certifications, such as CCNP/CCIE/JNCIS/JNCIP or equivalent, are often required or preferred.
Several years of experience in network engineering or a related field, typically as a Network Engineer I or equivalent role.
Strong technical knowledge of network protocols, routing, switching, firewall configuration, and security best practices.
Excellent problem-solving skills to diagnose and resolve complex network issues.
Effective written and verbal communication skills for documenting network changes and collaborating with team members.
Ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams and provide mentorship to junior engineers.
Skills and Abilities
Proficiency in configuring and managing Telecommunication core network devices, including Cisco 9Ks + Nexus as well as Juniper MXes, ACX and QFX.
Understanding of network security principles, including firewall rules, access controls, and encryption.
Familiarity with network monitoring tools such as Prometheus, Grafana and the ability to use them to identify and address network performance and security issues.
Basic scripting skills to automate network tasks and configurations. (Python or other scripting languages would be an asset).
Willingness to learn and adapt to new technologies and industry trends in networking.
Strong documentation skills to maintain accurate records of network configurations and changes.
Strong analytical and critical thinking skills to troubleshoot and resolve network-related problems.
Effective time management skills to prioritize tasks and meet project deadlines.
Ability to work with network equipment vendors and service providers to procure and maintain network equipment and services.
Understanding of disaster recovery principles and experience in planning and testing network disaster recovery processes.
Possesses integrity, confidentiality and high ethical standards.
Demonstrates initiative, judgment and adaptability; takes a solution-based approach to problems and resolves problems quickly and effectively.
Ability to organize work, be accurate, set priorities, multitask and work with minimal direction; ability to meet strict deadlines.
Ability to thrive in a dynamic, fast-paced environment, work as a team or independently.
Ability to be creative and innovative to respond to the business and technical support needs.
Ability to build and maintain strong relationship skills and provide exceptional customer service to internal and external clients.
CCIE SP (Service Provider) or JNCIP SP equivalent level of expertise would be a valuable asset.
Knowledge of Cisco ASR9K (IOS XR), ASR1K (IOS XE) and IOS.
Knowledge of Juniper MX, ACX, QFX, SRX (JUNOS) would be an asset.
Knowledge of Carrier Ethernet technologies, MEF standards, and MPLS Networking.
Knowledge of / experience with Optical Networking.
Strong knowledge in IP networking, Routing Protocols (i.e. OSPF, BGP, ISIS), MPLS, VPWS, L2/L3VPN.
Uses debugging tools and lab simulations to analyze problems and identify solutions.
Linux experience would be an asset.
