Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) Program
The AIS Program is a province-wide program that helps prevent the introduction and spread of AIS into Alberta's lakes, rivers, and across borders. Watercraft inspections are part of a larger province-wide AIS Program that includes monitoring, response planning, education campaigns, and policy. The Watercraft Inspections and Decontamination Program is focused primarily along major highways in Alberta, where it is mandatory for all vehicles transporting watercraft to stop at open inspection stations.
Role ResponsibilitiesWe have several exciting opportunities to join the AIS program for the 2026 watercraft inspection season. If you are comfortable approaching new people, can handle pressure well, are able to work outdoors for long hours and enjoy working with the public, this may be the job for you
AIS Site Leads are responsible for interviewing watercraft owners, inspecting and decontaminating watercraft, and issuing Quarantine Orders as Fishery Guardians, in addition to:
- Assisting with training and mentoring of AIS Watercraft Inspectors at the inspection station and maintaining operational readiness of staff and equipment.
- Maintaining occupational health and safety (OH&S) documentation, leading site OH&S tailgate meetings, assisting supervisors with site-specific hazard assessments, and ensuring that Watercraft Inspectors follow safe work procedures.
- Reviewing and approving schedule changes at their stations.
- Leading full watercraft decontaminations when AIS-fouled watercraft are intercepted.

The goal of the Site Leads is to resolve the issues of quarantine / decontamination of the watercraft in a timely manner, and to ensure the successful day to day operations of the watercraft inspection stations.
Agility: Demonstrates ability to anticipate, assess, and readily adapt to changing priorities and effectively work in a changing environment. The ability to travel and work in variable environmental conditions is required.
Develop Networks: Site Leads will be educating members of the public on aquatic invasive species threats and therefore need to be outgoing and confident in providing expert advice on preventative measures.
QualificationsMinimum Requirement:
- A completed high school diploma plus 12 months (1 year) of related experience.
Additional Requirements:

- A valid Alberta Class 5 driver's license or an equivalent Canadian license.
o For more information on determining license equivalencies, exchanging a non-Alberta license, or information on licensed driver training schools.
- A valid Standard First Aid certificate with CPR certification.
- A Valid Criminal Record Check.
Related experience:
- Previous experience working at Government of Alberta watercraft inspection stations.
- Hands-on mechanical experience in a workshop or field environment.
- Skilled in operating, troubleshooting, and performing basic maintenance on high-pressure hot water decontamination units.
- Proven ability to communicate effectively with members of the public in high-pressure situations.
- Knowledge and practical experience with the Government of Alberta Occupational Health and Safety Program.
- Detailed understanding of complex watercraft and their mechanical systems.

Notes- This competition is for temporary wage positions located in Burmis, Cold Lake, Dunmore, Hanna, Vermilion, and Wainwright hours per week.
- Length of employment is dependent upon program budget and the station selected. Some positions may be required from April 1st through October 31st, 2026.
- The position will be required to work a flexible schedule that includes travel, shift, and weekend work, potentially throughout the spring and into late fall. The position will require working outside of regular business hours, including weekends and shift work. The Site Leads located at the Dunmore inspection station will be regularly required to work overnight shifts.
Sites will be at watercraft inspection stations on major highways, and locations could include:
- BURMIS (2 positions available)
- COLD LAKE
- DUNMORE (2 positions available)
- HANNA
- VERMILION
- WAINWRIGHT
What We Offer:
- Wage employees receive 11.6% in addition to regular wage earnings in lieu of paid holidays and vacation leave:
o 5.6% of regular wage earnings instead of paid holidays
o 6% of regular wage earnings instead of annual vacation pay
Shift differential and opportunity to work overtime, evening, and weekend shifts

Step 2 – Virtual Panel Interview Assessment
- Applicants who successfully pass the screening phase will be invited to a virtual interview session.
- Interviews will consist of behavioural competency, technical and situational based questions
- Candidates are required to upload a copy of their completed pre-employment forms, including the academic and reference consent form and reference list containing three (3) work-related references.
Step 3 – Pre-employment Checks
- References and post-secondary checks (if applicable)
- Final candidates must pass a criminal records check.
Step 4 – Extend a Job Offer
- Complete and provide proof that all conditions of employment have been met prior to the first day of work
Step 5 – Training and Orientation
Approximate Estimated Timelines
- November – December 31st: Application deadline (job posting now closed)
- Mid December – January: Virtual interview sessions commence
- January to March– Job offers are extended
- April to May – Training and orientation scheduled
All chosen candidates will be required to successfully complete mandatory training. Training is scheduled for April 2026. Site Leads will also be required to attend Decontamination Training in mid-April.
