The Latin American Studies program in the Department of Italian, Spanish, Portuguese & Latin American Studies seeks a sessional lecturer from January 1st, 2026 to April 30th, 2026 for the following course:
LAS 400 H1 S: Topics in Latin American Studies – Images that Speak: Visual Culture, Power and Representation in Latin America
For the Winter 2026 offering, LAS 400 H1 S is an interdisciplinary seminar that examines the role of visual culture in shaping understandings of Latin America through historical and contemporary examples. Considering different forms of imagery to include photographs, political posters, comics, album covers, and social media, students will analyze how ideas circulate across national and global contexts to construct narratives about identity, gender, race and nationhood in Latin America. In addition, the seminar also explores how artists, activists and everyday user employ images to challenge dominant representations and generate new forms of visibility.

Minimum qualifications: Ph.D. in Latin American History or related discipline. Minimum 5 years of experience as a sole-responsibility course instructor in university settings. Proven track record of excellence in teaching in the subject area of the course. Familiarity with Canvas / Quercus.
Preferred qualifications: Experience teaching interdisciplinary university courses on politics, gender and/or social justice, and culture. Record of research publications on gender / feminist issues in Latin America.
Description of duties: All normal duties related to the design and teaching of a university credit course, including preparation and delivery of course content. Holding regular office hours in person and via email, in addition to in-person class meetings. Development, administration and marking of assignments, tests and exams; calculation and submission of grades.
